Technical Overview:

The final stage of the Giro is, as usual recently, an ITT, but this time it is the only “long” one, like it happened last time in 2012. From Senago to Milano, the road will always be pan flat, but it will not be straight all the way. The route is divided into three parts by the two intermediate checkpoints, in Cascina Battiloca (km 9.2) and Sesto San Giovanni (km 18.8). Of these three sectors the last one is the most power-friendly, featuring long straights with turns only at the end into the city center, to get to the usual finish line in front of the Duomo.

What to expect:

It is a time trial for pure specialists in a Giro that barely has any time trials… Gaps should be fairly consistent but it all depends on how the GC looks like coming into the stage.

From the second intermediate in Sesto San Giovanni it's the same route as the 2017 final ITT. Perfect for big engines.

Then I'll follow the TT route and take some pictures where there aren't many fans.
For the last 20-30 riders I'll be in Milan close to the finish.

Yates to come 3rd of the top 3 on GC. Caruso seems to be weakening but he should be close to Bernal on this stage. Of course its always hard to judge how the riders are recovering. Obviously we know more after tomorrow.

Caruso produced pretty much Bernal level W/kg on the finishing climbs on stages 17 and 19. Of course end of stage 30-40 minute effort is different to an ITT of the same duration and there is a power loss from riding in the TT position, but as a rough estimate, it looks like Caruso can produce 30-35 watts more than Bernal for the duration of the ITT, so he should beat Bernal relatively easily.

So you're an actual time trial traveller?

Based purely on the stage 1 Foss, Almeida and Vlasov should be the best among the GC contenders. Caruso also did well on that stage. Yates hasn't ridden a great TT on a Bianchi bike yet, so it'll be difficult for him to overtake Caruso, unless he takes more time on him tomorrow.

Affini, Cavagna and Ganna and maybe Bettiol and Moscon should finish high up.

Will Ganna be able to smash Zülle's 53.771 avg. from 1998 or is the course too technical? And will the wind be in his favor?

Foss might be the best TTer in the top ten, but the gap in front of him is huge.
Dan Martin will be glad to see how big the gap back to 11th is so that he can get his top ten in all three GTs

How much do people reckon can Almeida gain here? There are still a few riders in front of him that he might be able to catch. That said, it's pretty insane how huge the gc gaps become behind him. Dan Martin is gonna finish in the top 10 likely more than 17 minutes behind the winner. That seems more than usual.

I think he can get 6th in GC. Vlasov is too far in front, and Martinez is too good of a TT'er to catch a minute on.
