After all this was the perfect stage for a long range attack, and there were even a couple of great candidates for it (looking at you Landa), yet nothing's happening.

Apparently you also forgot.Are people forgetting how awful the 2017 Giro was? There wasn't a single stage with GC action before the final climb. This year's Torino stage alone puts this year ahead.
