Maybe now that the sprint teams have no chances they will stop acting dangerous and cause more crashes.

I thought it is usually the race organization that makes the decision about a section of a stage being rerouted or cancelled. But this is sounding like Swiss authorities would make the final decision?
Possibly RCS required the road to be repaved but local authorities didn't comply? Most roads I've seen during this Giro were in very good state.

This stage will be amazing. Second mountain climb is the type of climb that always delivers just like Mortirolo.

Unfortunately I don't think it will deliver. The last climb is too significant, there is also a long stretch in the Rhone Valley and this huge descent is dangerous in this weather. They will focus on Crans Montana but a strong tempo on Coeur by one of top teams is likely.

Stelvio is longer and tougher with the top of the climb over 600m higher than Coeur. There was almost no flat between Stelvio and Lago di Canceno on that stage. At that was the last big mountain stage, not the first.

So, I will be very suprised if we see something similar today.
I think in the 2020 Giro peloton Dennis would do the exact same on CdC before pacing the entire valley.

CdC is objectively easier, but still super hard, but I think what really made Stelvio look like that is the big gaps in overall level that Giro and Dennis' sudden stratospheric level

Presumably if the climb is canceled they don't use any alternative and just go through Martigny with 40km of flat or whatever it is?

Well, a confident descender could take advantage if he has teammates up the road to help him in the Rhone valley and up the first part of Crans Montana. Caruso is the only name that now comes to mind. I do not think Roglic, Thomas or Almeida will try anything bar for the last climb. Pinot may be tempted to go for his non-goal of the mountain jersey and winning a stage, but he will need to go early in that case, and with enough support.

With bad weather we could get some Les Deux Alpes 1998 vibes today. Let's see if the time gaps are as gargantuan.

I can see Bahrain drilling the descent of the San Bernado to try and get a buffer going on to the CdC

Nah.

The descent after the tunnel is 4% that's very straightforward, wide roads.

The 6km 9% section would have been a nice place to create a gap.

If they cancel that, better start in Martigny straight away, follow the valley until Sion for 40 km, then do Crans Montana. A nice 55 km stage.

I hope they can replace it at least, not just shortening the stage. But the riders also asked shortening in one of the very rainy stages and the Giro org didn't comply.

Hours before the start and already excitement. Will we get a proper mountain stage or not? The Giro always delivers.
