Its clear that QS want to give away the pink. Which means giving the break a big chunk of time. We can already see they are weak chasing. So if nobody else want to chase that break , suddenly you working very hard all day to keep it within 5 minutes so that mcnulty doesn't get close to pink. And mcnulty was a 3rd week monster last year at le tdf. He's just too good to let up the road this early in the Giro.

They couldve just give them 4 minutes and someone would've gotten pink easily.

You don't need to work hard to keep them at 4 minutes at all, cause the breakaway won't care to go super hard either as long as they can battle for the stage.

Now they just burned Ballerini and Cerny.

Then don't give him 10 minutes lmao? What?

It's easier to just keep them at a somewhat safe distance then burning your riders to keep closing gaps.

McNulty is there to win the stage, not to get pink.
Yeah I know but Quickstep wants to give away the jersey. If you keep him at 6 minutes or so then Jumbo will make sure the peloton doesn't give more so Remco would stay in pink. McNulty has not been giving his all untill today to go for stages indeed, but what if he's suddenly in the lead with minutes because they want to give the jersey away.

They also don't have a half-decent sprinter or hilly type in their roster. Just eight items of pack fodder.
Tivani would have been good enough to target the intermediate sprints wouldn't he?

Makes it worse that they failed to organize the paperwork of their potentially best rider!

I really don't get this argument. Just don't give him 10 min? It's not that hard. There were others in the break that wouldve gotten Pink before McNulty like Leknessund, Kung or Healy.

McNulty is almost 6' behind. Can just finish 4 minutes back and he's still not dangerous. And someone else would be in pink.

Ballerini and cerny were literally included in the Giro team to burn themselves in situations like this. Once the right break goes, pace slows and they recover. But it's not like they will pace remco on lago laceno climb.

I don't even 100% think it's right to chase mcnulty, but they clearly feel its too early in the Giro to take risk with someone like him and its very understandable

Maybe indeed. But I'm thinking that McNulty is one of the maybe 10 guys they wouldn't allow to go. He's a proven climber and we all know what a leader jersey can do to someone. Look at Julian or Voeckler. Even Almeida.
And if McNulty rides minutes ahead of his breakaway compagnions it's not even sure someone else will take the jersey when the peloton is coming closer, what I assume they will do on the last climb. Test the legs and see if you can take time.

But I understand your point. I'm just thinking they're sticking to the plan.

Could've just had Mcnulty and Healy 2.30 up the road and controlling all day with a few on the front at this point.

Instead we have the Tour of Flanders and Roglic has snuck into the front group?

If TeeJay Van Garderen and Bobby Julich had a baby, they would name him Brandon McNulty

Lol please, there's like 3 kilometres of actual climbing in the finale and there have been plenty of other competent climbers in each breakaway attempt.
I'm just guessing the options, what could happen.

Remco only one with leg warmers lol. Maybe that's why he's behind. Sh*tshow of Quickstep otherwise.
