I think they genuinely fear him. For sure he is a very inconsistent rider, but he is capable of doing monster climbing performances
Normally you put a list with riders from the big teams who you wouldn't be allow to go in the break. I assume McNulty will be on that.
Strong commited group now, if it's only Ballerini working this could be it. Cerny now full gass.

First proper battle to get in the break and Corratec have nobody capable of even trying to get in, that's what you get when you invite an amateur-level team. The other WC teams also missing for now.

On paper Conti should be able to at least try, but he is no longer the rider he used to be.

Ballerini is not going to have fun these 3 weeks if he needs to catch every break for no reason.

QS have a strong team I think but seem a bit inexperienced in the race management aspect, a stronger Tim Declercq would've been helpful in that.

Just let them go lads

Mcnulty is quite a specific and legitimate reason today.

Again, he's 5 minutes behind, what's the problem???

Sure if he was a threat for pink, I would get it. It would be quite dangerous as you never know but who cares if he takes 3 minutes back today?

Think QS are going to have to concede on whichever of McNulty and Healy they don't want up the road, neither has missed a move and they've already had two domestiques dropped.

If you give him 10 minutes he's 5 minutes ahead suddenly.

Then don't give him 10 minutes lmao? What?

It's easier to just keep them at a somewhat safe distance then burning your riders to keep closing gaps.

McNulty is there to win the stage, not to get pink.

Zero clue why Quick Step denied that breakaway.

Küng would've been a perfect pink jersey until Switzerland!
I think he would have struggled to keep up with Barta and Leknessund on that climb. But yeah, didn't see the problem either. Unless they didn't want Cepeda to get a massive headstart. He is a bit of an unknown, and potentially dangerous

I mean they don't have a climber in their roster and to be fair even AG2R wasn't able to put Lapeira or Prodhomme into the group.

Its clear that QS want to give away the pink. Which means giving the break a big chunk of time. We can already see they are weak chasing. So if nobody else want to chase that break , suddenly you working very hard all day to keep it within 5 minutes so that mcnulty doesn't get close to pink. And mcnulty was a 3rd week monster last year at le tdf. He's just too good to let up the road this early in the Giro.

Between Jayco wanting to pace the climbs, these breakaway battles, the Alps and the next legitimately flat stage being stage 17, this is going to be a very long Giro for some of these sprinters. Well, unless they abandon, of course.

Cerny and Balla dropped with 150k to go

Are the Giro time cuts still a joke, could try and OTL them if not?

Küng was climbing surprisingly well at Malbun last year!
