Technical Overview:

A transitional stage bringing the peloton to the Tyrrhenian coast. The day starts with a bang, as the peloton will hit the short but tough Passo Serra (GPM3, 4 km at 7.3%) after only 6 km from the start. Straight after that, the riders will find the two uncategorized ramps of Passo di Mirabella (2.5 km at 6%) and Croce Calabrone (2 km at 7%), after which the road will become a long and irregular ascending false flat. This false flat culminates after about 35 km, including a few small ramps and descents, as well as the intermediate sprint of Sant’Angelo di Lombardi, just before the top. After that it will be time for a 40 km long descending section, again very irregular just like the ascending one. It ends at the foot of the final climb of the day, the short but steep Oliveto Citra (GPM3, 2.6 km at 7.6%). The top is at 57 km to go, of which 23 km are of rolling terrain and the last 34 are pan flat, with the intermediate sprint of Battipaglia 26 km before the finishing line in Salerno.

The Climbs:

Passo Serra
: GPM3, 4 km at 7.3%

It is the same climb as the one in stage 9 of the Giro 2015. In the Garibaldi it is listed as 4 km at 6.5% but that is wrong, as the average is 7.3%, as confirmed by the official altitude gain of 292m. We have no profile this year, but we still have the one of 2015, where the climb is listed as 3.6 km at 8%, as they marked the start a bit further than this year. Still, exactly the same climb.

Oliveto Citra: GPM3, 2.6 km at 7.6%

Shorter than Passo Serra but just as tough. No profile at all this time.

What to Expect:

This is a good stage for a breakaway, but if the peloton keeps the tempo high a mass sprint should be very likely.

The final KOM is deceptively tricky.

With the predicted weather on top of everything, this is not going to be an easy day. Should be a sprint of course, but with how many sprinters?

Gaviria didn't look particularly keen with the weather in De Panne.

Pedersen against Matthews once again?

It will be raining cats and dogs all days, so Ackermann will win.

He really needs a win, but he also seems soooo competent at making wrog decisions. Even when the decision seems right, like staying at Gaviria's wheel not Milan's.

Other than that: this is a profile, like a few this Giro, that should have been ridden the other way around and it would have been a good stage.

Will the pace be low enough for Cav, Gaviria, and/or Ackermann to stay in the group or catch back up? If Cav and Gaviria are dropped will Astana and Movistar bring the farm back to pace them back? Will Pinot go for the KoM points off the start to and maintain energy so he doesn’t end up like Cunego? Will Almeida be pushed out the back again on the descent or will he live up to the hype of his long lost brother Almedia? Will Evenepoel continue to be isolated for Roglic or will Ineos keep pushing the pace? These questions and more will be answered next time on 2023 Giro d’ Italia!

Hopefully no crashes in the rain.

Meh design, nothing to spice it up in the final, Pinot should go after the early KOM points and rest, it's a sprinters' stage, the last climb is way too far from the finish.

Top heavy stage with all of the difficulties in the first half which makes it break favourable. If a break forms similar to yesterday's group it will probably succeed. although teams like Bike Exchange will chase for this stage. The worse the weather the better for the break.

Nah - Bike Exchange should be aiming to get one or two in the break - Teams with options should prefer this alternative to dragging the peleton all day.

Yeah these types of stages are often unpredictable. Sometimes they can be really hard if the racing is aggressive.

Ackermann's climbing looked really good the past couple of days. He normally should be okay.

And it's a 50pt stage, by the way, contrary to tomorrow. So I think the sprinter teams will do what they can to keep it together.

This year's Giro is pretty easy. All the tough climbs are at the start of the stages.

I don't mind a stage like this after yesterday. Many tired legs in the peloton so it shouldn't be easy for the sprinters team to control it, especially if Jayco and/or Trek manage to have riders in the break.

Sprinter teams are still with all riders, Groves Pedersen and Matthews can climb well, in my opinion will be very difficult for the break to go and stage will end with a sprint, maybe of a reduced bunch
