Giro d'Italia 2023 Giro d'Italia: Stage-by-Stage Analysis

But it is like the Stelvio Stage in 2014. The riders who were dropped on the Stelvio descent never came back, despite a long flat valley road.

If someone blows on St Bernard or Coeur, their giro is done

Even someone who is barely hanging on over the first 2 climbs, can lose minutes on the final climb. It is a legit cat 1
I think it’s the most fascinating stage (at least for my viewing) because of the mostly unknown new climb and all the kms they’ll be riding above 2000’. And a mystery stage because because it could be great or it could end up a bit disappointing because of the long final flat stretch. But it’s good that the last climb isn’t the toughest.

Another great thing about stage 13 is we only have to wait 2 weeks to see it (rather than 3 weeks till stage 19). :)

With such a hard/steep finishes you will often see a waiting game regardless of having a MTT or not.
Of course, tough MTT contributes but it's not decisive.
Yeah. Hence why it was wrong placing both of the stages and the climbs. Fedaia never should have been part of that stage as a mtf. Killed the whole chance for racing before. The MTT only added to that.

They did it all correct in 1998! First the big Dolomites stage, with Fedaia as a spring board . Then Alpe di Pampeago for a final climb battle between Pantani & Tonkov. Finally Montecampione with a hard climb before so the fight got going almost immediately from the bottom of Montecampione. Of course it was being helped by Pantani being Pantani and Zülle running dry. But still.

That's why I opined, they could've learned from their mistakes from 15 years ago. Even with Lussari instead of Kronplatz!

I guess this also explains why there are three separate time checks on the climb. That's three spots to put a fixed camera.
I’m sure we’ll get mostly chopper views of riders, though if weather is bad then they won’t be able to show much. Don’t see why they can’t put more fixed cams along the climb so we can watch it like a cross (or like an FIS Nordic) race.

They'll probably follow number 1 & 2 with motorbikes. Give extended helicopter shots of number 3 and have an additional motorbike for either no. 4 or 5 on gc.

Must admit to being increasingly less keen on GTs overall, 2022's edition was awful, and this year's startlist doesn't excite me much. But Eshnar's previews are so ridiculously good, they've almost got me in the mood.

Am sure it's been mentioned before, but where are the sprinter/puncheurs? Do we really need another three weeks of praise for Magnus's moustache? I suppose it will at least be a distraction from the endless Remco/Roglic fanfights.

Mads is there too. And Cav. Mads quite active in GT so far.

I'm gonna be a little bit annoy if they put Zoncolan ITT on stage 20. You basically can just put the riders on a weigh-in and then do a zwift power test and you have the stage result.

Why not put a nice hilly stage around the Slovenian border for stage 20? Something dynamic with strategic consideration, but not so hard after previous day passes and tre cime. Or if ITT are so apparently wonderful then put a TT with som hills but more dynamic and not uphill final

Because you want a route that is as similar as possible to the original. You can't persuade Roglic and Remco with a lot of TT's and then reduce it.

For Evenepoel it may have been a big part of the decision, for Roglic I doubt that it was. But I agree with the point, it's terrible to change the whole dynamics of a route way after riders have fully committed their season to it.

A Zoncolan MTT is nothing but a pure, brutal test of climbing and therefore literally the worst possible Lussari MTT replacement for Evenepoel...
If Evenepoel thought Lussari was good for him he shouldn't complain about Zoncolan. It's still a stupid MTT replaced by a different stupid MTT.

I'm more worried about stage 13 turning to shambles.

It is the same for everybody.

A change this late is always gonna be controversial. Understandably there will be criticism towards the organizer. How could it go this far etc.

However, the best way to react is to just get on with it now. See if there will be a change or not. There is a lot of racing until stage 20.
