Giro d'Italia 2023 Giro d'Italia: Stage-by-Stage Analysis

19 isn't the queen stage. That's 13.

Stage 19 is very similar to stage 15? from 2007. Selection down to about 6 riders on the Giau, then little difference on the rest of the stage
On stage 13 you have a long flat section between the penultimate and last climb, and the climb to Crans is not that hard. If someone doesn't up the pace significantly already on Coeur, I'm not very convinced that we'll have big gaps that day. Coeur - Crans isn't exactly Finestre-Sestriere or Mortirolo-Aprica.

But it is like the Stelvio Stage in 2014. The riders who were dropped on the Stelvio descent never came back, despite a long flat valley road.

If someone blows on St Bernard or Coeur, their giro is done

Even someone who is barely hanging on over the first 2 climbs, can lose minutes on the final climb. It is a legit cat 1

Let me get this straight; the whole drama regarding stage 20 is because they "suddenly" realised that the road to the top is actually quite narrow?
Maybe it's time to implement a measuring-the-width-of-the-road protocol. Should be quite easy; just need some measuring tapes. Or, since it's 2023, probably some of that fancy equipment that goes "Beep!"

Perhaps they can reuse the UCI's sock height measuring device!

Or the Colle dell'Agnello and Risoul in 2016..

Don't think I watched that stage. How hard was Stelvio ridden?

If there are only 5-6-7 men left at the top of Coeur (and not many more at the bottom of Crans) it could be a good stage. But if there is 15-20 or more at the top of Coeur, I don't think it will be big gaps at the end of the stage.

the ascent wasn't ridden that hard. It was the descent where the race was made

No it wasn't.
It was the Sella show.

Apart from that, some testing the waters on Giau which killed Klöden. Then, waiting, waiting, waiting. Until some last 3k attacks from Ricco, Di Luca & co on Fedaia!

Just like on Pampeago. Only that Menchov surprisingly best from the favorites group.

With such a hard/steep finishes you will often see a waiting game regardless of having a MTT or not.
Of course, tough MTT contributes but it's not decisive.

Simoni and DiLuca tried to drop Contador on Giau. They nearly blew themselves up in the process, which led to the rest of the stage being largely soft peddled, except for Ricco on Fedia
