The whole Astana team was a mess before the climb and Nibali was far back. Sky took the opportunity and went really hard on the first ramp, Moscon worked for him.

He was far back but continued to go backwards. Strange.
Yeah, maybe it was just the fact that it was the first day of racing after a training camp at high altitude, the same thing happened to Pozzovivo on the first Trentino mountain sstage last year.

First Astana was Kangert I think. Nibali bad but could be expected after two weeks on Teide. We'll see how he goes tomorrow and the day after.

Great performance by Ciccone, very consistent year so far.

99% it was Fuglsang
make it 100%.

Surprisingly strong performaces by Firsanov, Cunego and Cicchione! Firsanov might be a good bet for the blue jersey ain't he!?

Landani powerful, but still with room for improvement for the Giro. But if he continues to build up his peak shape that kind of way he should simply ace the Giro cols. Let's wait for the upcoming stages to judge his current recovery. This has been his weakness at Itzulia after his few race days.

Nibali very poor. Just bad. Of course he was at Teide.but if he ain't fight back he's gonna get slaughtered by Landani. No good sign at all to be THAT far away from Mikel here. Somehow I'm sure he's gonna get better in time for the Giro. Whether it's enough is to be seen. Here he looks chanceless now already. Never say never though.

I think he just came back from altitude.

We'd have known a bit more if they hadn't cancelled the Tirreno MTF.
He was fine before going to Teide and his winter prep went great according to all sources I know. You'll recall he was also bad in the first hard stage of Tour de San Luis. I reckon there's no reason to worry unless he underperforms on stage 4.

Patrick Konrad finished 9th with the same time as the 4th rider, 14 seconds behind Landa.
He's a great talent (born in 1991, finished 3rd in the 2013 Tour de l'Avenir and 4th in the 2014 Österreich-Rundfahrt).
He turned pro in 2015 and seems to like the heat, he finished 10th on gc in the Tour of Oman and in Abu Dhabi, so he could aim for a Vuelta top 10 in 1-2 years.
In 2015 he also finished 5th in the Tour of Denmark (8th in the ITT) and 9th in the Tour de l'Ain, he's a great prospect. :)
