Tomorrow has to be the dummest stage to try something. The day before the first MTF is really the day you want to pick out to go balls to the wall.

true. However it should be a very reduced group at some point. And if there are no or few teammates around…You’re basically making the same effort anyone who chases has to make.

Maybe a good chance for those who have lost time to claw some back with teams apprehensive to attack before the high mountains

Martinez, Schachmann or maybe even Fausto "Fausto" Masnada

Matthews must be wondering what he has to do to get a win but he's definitely lost some of his top end speed and once again his positioning wasn't great, hitting the wind much too soon and leaving himself too much to do at the finish. BEX look like they will be relying on Yates and Kaden Groves for wins this season unless Groenewegen comes good. Next season Matthews might be more useful as a pilot fish for the other two at least in the flatter stages.

BEX are a shadow of the team they once were. I wonder what the causes of their rapid decline are? That 2020 deal that didn't go through, which led to the departure of Bannon would have to be up there. What do other people think?

Something is obviously off. Their tactics are all over the place. They chase when they shouldn't and don't chase when they should and their sprint train isn't working well. Matthews is often left on his own early, in the classics. Doesn't seem to be a team that is locked in.

It can be traced back to ignoring their Classics team for the last five years which means they are limited in one day races and these type of riders can get into breaks and sneak wins in stage races - They also ride in the 'old school' Italian way of totally supporting one leader which is only effective if you exceptional leaders - They also pivoted the wrong way in chasing GC ( which to be fair has had some success ) at GT's, when they dont have a big enough budget to fully support these aims - They also have trouble keeping good Aussie talent and they've had some bad luck with their selection of Aussie talent - For example, they had the choice of Hamilton and Hindley - The problem was that Hindley was the leader for the 2016 and 2017 L'Avenir but was a bit disappointing because his recovery was not good enough, whereas Hamilton who was riding as a domestic, recovered much better - Then you look at Power and Stannard - Along with Ewan they were the best Aussie under 23's in the last ten years - Power and Stannard never lived up to their potential, while Ewan left because he wanted a whole team built around him.

Groves - he's been over-raced with him already clocking 47 race days, because he is chasing points and filling in gaps , so they have to be careful how he is placed for the remain - In saying that there is a chance Groves may go to the TDF because Yates will probably miss - The thinking is Groves can infiltrate breakaways and if necessary do a sprint final if Groenewegen is not there - It does look like Groenewegen will ride the Vuelta with the start in Holland.

meanwhile Marc Hirschi has had another bike change. If Poagacar has the same issues, the Tour could still be interesting in the end
