No. Remind me when Itzulia was eight stages long, including two long mountain top finishes.

Or when Tirreno had no stages for the sprinters.

Or when Tour de Suisse had no stages for the sprinters.
Tour de Suisse had as many stages for the sprinters last year as this year. And lol at the two mountain stages being unipuerto MTFs being part of what makes this race "crazy" compared to other one-week stage races.

Is this year's edition (with only 8 stages) crazy and incomparable to the 2016 edition (with 9 stages)? Which of the two do you think have the most terrain for GC racing?

Dani Martinez lost 50s?

Yeah, one of those to get dropped on the efforts on the final climb. Unclear if he was caught out on position or just bad legs, but he didn't look comfy when we saw him.

Mäder, Pinot and Martinez out of the GC battle. Vlasov, Evenepoel and Fuglsang looked good. Van Wilder too.

Hard work but I don't think 50s is totally unrecoverable given the stages to come if it was just a bad day

Looks like Moscon's finally got over his health issues, First finish since March and comes in with the second group. With Lutsenko also well down the comeback trail, Astana could have a decent TDF team.

Will Sagan be able to sprint for the win in one of these stages? Today he came in the Grupetto 15 minutes down. Prime Sagan would have cleaned up today's stage. Maybe stage 3 could be an option?

too steep of a climb too close to the finish for Sagan, even in his prime.

I suspect he would have been in the second group

I'm so sorry for my post.

Why do you always need to do this crap?

It would be a tough ask, but he has done it before. Like in Tirreno five years ago:

That was a quite furious opening to the race. Wouldn't have expected that big gaps.

Fuglsang looks strong. Certainly a contender for the overall, if his high altitude climbing is just as fine. Evenepoel strong, but he's always vulnerable. Vlasov brings a good combination of TT & climbing.

It's gonna be interesting now. On paper they all need to ride aggressive and put Evenepoel under pressure from here on. Certainly Fuglsang & Yates. Bora can go 1-2 with Higuita & Vlasov.

Pozzovivo surprisingly strong. If he has been able to recover a bit from his crash at the Giro d'Italia and reminisce his Blockhaus shape, he might even be a dark horse.

Lutsenko also is an aggressive rider. Looks more like lower end top 10 for me. But with a good TT like at last years Dauphine, who knows.

Hirschi could be a surprise based on how his climbing is going to be. Carmenzind used to be a contender for the golden jersey back in the day. So theoretically Hirschi could snatch a top 5 here. But one swallow doesn't make a summer of course. Gonna be interesting to see what he's able to show in Switzerland & Liechtenstein!

This looks promising on paper. Both the contenders & the route offered to them. But let's not get too excited in advance.

Martinez out already is a negative surprise. Arensman said at the Giro d'Italia, that he always has problems getting his motor into a rhythm the first stages. Might be cooked, might be a victim of that intense kick-off.

Pinot doesn't look promising. Still has been 2nd at the 2020 Dauphine. If he wants to contest for the polka dots at the Tour de France, there's an urgent need for improvements in the Alps upcoming weekend.

Cosnefroy had a total off day it seems. Ill?

Maybe the guys having already ridden Argau had a benefit, because the rhythm had been already there?

To be fair nobody would have expected Williams to be there even in an Ineos jersey.

But if he would have been mentioned at some point in the race as the lead group was pretty small. We heard Pidcock's name all day but Williams has won three times as many races now ;)
Surprised Magnus didn't spot him.

Unclear? He got dropped.

I mean the post literally started with "one of those to get dropped on the efforts on the final climb"...

He obviously didn't have the legs to get back to the front group, but it didn't seem particularly clear from the TV footage whether his positioning was bad when the attacks went in again or whether he just had nothing at all today (bar him not looking happy when we did see there was a gap to him and Pinot). The finale action clearly caught quite a few people by surprise. If you want to double check the replay and see whether he went front to back or whether he was initially on the wrong side of someone losing the wheel at the wrong time please do.

A sizeable group got back. He didn't. It wasn't unclear. He didn't have the legs. He was suffering in the back.

Remco is still on to win the Vuelta. But some great competition today from Fuglsang, Vlasov and others.

Martinez may deliberately come into a prep race on lower form than in the spring races?

In 2020 he won the Dauphine but was nowhere in the Tour.
In 2021 he was kinda nowhere in TotA, then was flying in the Giro.

Van Wilder was in the last group that got back I think, so he lost quite a bit of time at the end of the climb I believe.
It was encouraging by Van Wilder. It wasn't an easy stage and the guy has -once again- had too few racing days so far this season with too many setbacks. Base level seems ok, but still unsure whether he can keep it up over the 2 MTF stages.

He crashed on stage 2 of TDF 2020.

I mean they need it cause now that EF got some decent results in the Dauphiné they're officially the worst WT team out there.
