Many of you need to realize you can add multiple browsers to your computer, especially your home computer. You can then differnetiate them based on what you're browsing. One for e-mail and serious things. Then one for fun or cycling related things and another to test out things.

Choices:

Chrome
Firefox
Internet Exploder
Safari
Opera
Konqerer (Unix OS)

Then there are the add-ons

You don't have to use just one, there's no law limiting you to one. Using different browsers also helps to group your browsing sessions or preferences.

Unfortunately some of us are technical imbeciles...

So... same time next week?

Thats what I thought too.
Both should go away, or be reduced.
I have a ginger-red burned into my eyes, Giro awesomeness and Lance pee sprankled all over my face. :D

Benson said the ads will be moved down and selected for our prude Americans.
Thats a good start I would say.

I hope the posters will follow.

Most of my posts are Kloden or Hitch related so you may as well scroll past both (my post and signature) while you're at it :D

By the way, I did go into the 'autobus' section briefly yesterday; checking out the '07 Vuelta route, with it's oh so steep climbs. Did I break the rules with this, or is the autobus section considered separate from CN?

I logged in via a google search, not through the CN archives ;)

I could read the forum for the rest of my life and never see another ad. Because, of course, I'm using Firefix with Adblock+ and NoScript.

The problem, for me and a lot of people, is that I also read on my phone and at work sometimes. No adblock etc. in those places.

Apparently Cycling News hasn't been informed they have competition. Podium Cafe for one. Lots of ads there, but unobtrusive and in some way cycling related.

Watching these new ads pop up here for the past few weeks is sort of like being at a nice party with interesting people you have something in common with, only to have it crashed by hooligans who trash the place. The end of the party is nigh.

So it seems for the interesting people.

FP remind me of the Rick Moranis character, Louis Tully in ghostbusters.

LOL, what a sh!tty communication.

Moving the ads further down, but not as far as the bottom is laughable. How is that an improvement to the current situation?

Screw you CN executives, I don't give a flying f*** about those ads anymore.

I'd be interested to see how much the Cafe was down too.
to answer your question directly, it looks like the daily posting wend down from 150 on 13 july to 86 on the 15th and started recovering on the 16th.
http://boardreader.com/fp/CyclingNews_Forum_11718543/Cafe_General_11626309.html

you’re welcome to use the tool in the future to monitor the effects of your rebellious tendencies :)p). btw, you need to get the ‘nuclear scientist memo’ too, as you lead everyone in the café (;) bang-bang :)))

but more importantly and on a more serious note. my monitoring of the situation and the boardreader shows unequivocally, that

(i) the temporary boycott had a profound impact on posting activity cutting it probably by 2/3 ds. i estimate that barely 25% of active users took part in the strike directly but the effect was beyond proportional because:

(A) some (like myself) though indifferent in principle as we’re well protected by addblocker, got sucked in
(B) others stopped posting b/c conversations lost vibrancy. some threads went prom usual silly to downright absurd.
(C) the ‘silent majority’ as usual went into ‘wait and see’ mode

(ii) the powers to be are certainly listening and are sensitive to the consequences. symptomatically, dan posted for the 1st time in the thread just prior to the start of the boycott and offered some compromises.

(iii) the boycott can not shut this place down as there was an obvious spike in appearance of new handles.

here you have a roadmap to plot your next mutiny :)

Thanks for the link. I should point out that my recent hectic posting activity in the Cafe is entirely down to my mission. I shall be reverting to 'normal' once that is achieved within the next month.

I also note some strange info on that page, i.e. that BoB was 'started' by Granville one year ago, and that Chaos was 'started' by Krebs one year ago!

Yeah, a rather obvious 'coincidence'.

Don't think anyone ever expected that to happen.

One would like to think that won't be necessary. I don't really see myself as a professional revolutionary.:p

why do you care if people think you are a bad poster? plenty of people think I am bad poster and I stay on.

In retrospect I probably should have added a ':D' after my post as it was a light hearted dig at myself.

Being called a bad poster is all very well because most of us here are just that. But being called the worst poster ever is a different situation altogether.

I'd be tempted to leave if somebody called me the worst ever.

i was just killing time and stumbled on some other interesting statistics. As shown below, one may want to consider boycott’s limits when resorting to the weapon.

- only 4.9% of total visitors to cycling news.com domains ever visit the forum.

implication - to me, it looks like a rather poor business strategy to attempt to squeeze more revenue by aggressive advertising from such a small audience. Risking the site’s well deserved good reputation by causing unhappy voices to spread the contagion around the global cycling community buffs, makes even less sense. Otoh, the aggressive advertising may indicate how desperate things have become economically.

- except for a January spike, the estimated global reach of the main domain - the biggest business attraction for advertisers - is down by a whopping 50% in the last 6 months.

implication - to add teeth to the boycotts , ways need to be found re. how to impact this statistic.

I simply don’t see any room here since the forum generates less than 5% of the cn traffic.

...yeah...kinda likewise I was sure I put one of these :D in my post... it would have made the post look as intended...as in, way ironic, and not nasty as it ended up looking like...so sorry if you took offence...the post was written in haste then I had to dash...major ooops...shoulda checked it...

...the point being is that we have something special here...and given the special love that FP has dumped on us maybe a change of venue for this mad wonderful circus we have created is the winning move...hanging around here may just be an festering irritation that will ultimately detract from our art...

Cheers

I doubt any of you stay anywhere near the top of the page anyway, we are always at the bottom reading the latest post!

You dufus'es just F-ed us up! Well those who actually read the forum with no ad-block (not me).

you might be onto to something mate.... if the adverts are to stay and not moved to the bottom of the thread only I think they would be far better at the top than in the middle of the threads, everyone will see them and people will scroll past them quickly and it wont interrupt the thread..although some threads could do will all the interruptions they get :S

Its not as simple as traffic though. If that traffic visitor based, page view based, physically server traffic as in mb of bandwidth used.

For example, if its visitor based, a forum visitor may view many more pages and stay online for longer (and therefore see more adverts) than a user on the regular site. If its based on actual server load in mb then each page on the regular site will be a lot more bandwidth intensive than a page on the forum

That said, 5% is actually pretty high for a forum. That effectively means that for every twenty visitors who visit cycling news at least one visits and participates in the forum. Thats fairly high. Other thing to bear in mind is of the 20,000 members about 200 are responsible for 90% of the posts.

I've used Ad Block with FF for years, but still got the rubbish at the top of each page.
Now, for some reason, I'm not getting the ads any more.
Does this mean we won?

Boomcie is taking over the site! He's every where!

Just added the following to my adblock on Chrome:

URL Block: .outbrain.com

No ads! Weee! I'm sure they'll change them but my URL block list just grows and grows ;)

Quoting this to see if I get a blob. Yup, we have blob. btw, this ;) has always been there.

I am seeing no ads of any kind for the first time! With Adblock on in Firefox I still had the big ones at the top on the right, but that is now blank space too.
The forum page looks really clean...and nice.

edited to say - it must be the quotes with the blue blob that are distorting this page.
