Also, we're going through and taking out 'offensive' 'soft-porn' 'mile-high', 'bikini-babe' ads individually.

Thanks for your patience.

Daniel

Can't we put that to a vote :D

But, I do find the selling of household products offensive.

So the crappy comprimise is that the ads are going to be moved down a bit (2nd post, 3rd post, 4th post, who knows), and they are going to remove the ads they never should have been showing in the first place as they were clearly contravening their own terms and conditions that forum members are expected to adhere by..

in otherwords, futures crappy adverts and the revenue they get from them is more important than the users, the mods, etc..

meh..

(and to be honest, missed absolutely nothing by taking a day away. the people worth talking to are all on twitter, christ, even Polish is there if you want a lance fight. )

sounds like an acceptable compromise

No it's not. What are they doing there in the first place? Why does the forum need to carry ads? Compared to the rest of the site (photos etc), the storage / bandwidth requirement of the forum is tiny. They don't pay any of the staff. Are they using the forum to try and recoup the costs of the rest of the site?

'Meh' is just about the only thing to say about this magnanimous gesture of moving the adds from under the first post to under the whatever post. If they must be there, they should clearly be at the bottom...according to the poll (not that you would expect anyone to take any notice of a poll on a forum) and according to the standards usually applied to places like this.

I also managed my time away without any dt's, and I don't even tweet.;)

The ads would still get served, so the stats from the ad farm would be the same. And we still have to scroll to the bottom of the page, so they'd be in front of eyes.

The thing is, my Adblock is also now blocking those very expensive ads on the side of the page, so they're doing a disservice to their clients. They can quote all sorts of figures on display numbers from their server, but if the ads aren't being shown, the click through will drop / disappear. So, it's self-defeating. If the inline ads disappear, then I'll disable Adblock.

I don't think anyone's listening though. I wonder whether anyone at cyclingnews actually knows anything about web advertising.

the boycott is 'byting'. the results so far:

the boardreader.com reports posting activity in road racing is down 4-fold:
from 743 on 14 jan to 184 yesterday. The results from the 16th not yet available.
http://boardreader.com/fp/CyclingNews_Forum_11718543/Professional_road_racing_11625029.html

the clinic is also stumbling:
13 jan - 218 posts, 14th - 131, 15th - 79.
http://boardreader.com/fp/CyclingNews_Forum_11718543/The_Clinic_11625285.html

given the value of my feedback, i believe i deserve leniency for violating the picket lines..:p:)

also, the mutiny leaders should suggest to the top ’nuclear scientists’ in the clinic (dr mas) and r. racing forum (the hitch) that they might (just might) pay attention to iran’s nuclear scientists…:p:)

We need a 'this forum is dying' thread.

I'd be interested to see how much the Cafe was down too.

That's a commitment I'd be happy to make as well.

Crikey! I have been reading the forum with Javascript turned off, so I never saw the inline ads. I switched to another computer and it's bad. Really bad.

I don't care about the ads remaining but I prefer them at the bottom of the page and in the middle of the thread which makes life so much better. I didn't post for the day, but I was busy yesterday and not posting for a day isn't going to hurt me. I won't leave and join a breakaway forum, I'll be staying here while there a people who still think I'm a good poster.

Many of you need to realize you can add multiple browsers to your computer, especially your home computer. You can then differnetiate them based on what you're browsing. One for e-mail and serious things. Then one for fun or cycling related things and another to test out things.

Choices:

Chrome
Firefox
Internet Exploder
Safari
Opera
Konqerer (Unix OS)

Then there are the add-ons

You don't have to use just one, there's no law limiting you to one. Using different browsers also helps to group your browsing sessions or preferences.

Wouldn't it be better if the ads were at the top of the page?

I doubt any of you stay anywhere near the top of the page anyway, we are always at the bottom reading the latest post!

You dufus'es just F-ed us up! Well those who actually read the forum with no ad-block (not me).

Except every thread you open you'd need to scroll past them. If they were below the last post (and by that I mean below the reply button) then they would be completely out of the way

I could read the forum for the rest of my life and never see another ad. Because, of course, I'm using Firefix with Adblock+ and NoScript.

The problem, for me and a lot of people, is that I also read on my phone and at work sometimes. No adblock etc. in those places.

Apparently Cycling News hasn't been informed they have competition. Podium Cafe for one. Lots of ads there, but unobtrusive and in some way cycling related.

Watching these new ads pop up here for the past few weeks is sort of like being at a nice party with interesting people you have something in common with, only to have it crashed by hooligans who trash the place. The end of the party is nigh.
