if the ads were cycling related they would be OK, but if they were cycling related and at bottom of page that would be perfect. God, i love Opera yet! :)

Opera is great because its easy to block individual ads here, it stops the mid -thread ads that seem to cater for retards/ dumb people or whatever and it also leaves other sites ads on unless you want to remove them.

The addblock extension for opera is good too for stuff that slips under the net. IE the flashing red Bont ad. And if I go onto the QC site its great, plenty of ads but they dont get on my nerves so I leave them and maybe click once in a while.

So, is there any agreement on the exact timing of all this across timezones yet?

One problem is not whether or not the ads become relevant, or where they are relocated (I voted for cycling ads at the bottom, if I must) the problem is the ill-will created by the people "behind the curtain" on this one. Safe to assume that some human, somewhere, made a conscious decision to unleash this idiocy. But they don't have the decency or courage to face up to it and explain their intentions. The "From Around The Web" garbage has been so idiotic even when it appeared on the CN homepage that it comes off much more like the work of a Bot than anything else.

Like the skimwords fiasco, Did they think we wouldn't notice?
Daniel Benson did well on that one. He got involved an communicated with us directly, but the braintrust that set that it all in motion never made a peep. I expect that same lack of accountability from the top this time around, unfortunately.

See you guys in a week, after tomorrow.

Do you really even notice them anymore? It's not the end of the world.

They don't bother me in the least (as i voted), nor am I one to really 'go on strike' over these matters. In fact I probably wont, boredom at work is much worse then some adds. However in respect to the other members here, I suppose it is worth considering. IMO this whole thing has been pretty overblown, taking this place more serious then need be. Agreed their is some disrespect going on, but it's not worth getting worked up over imo.

I wouldn't leave this place for another forum tho (i might join that other forum but i'd still come here. And yes creating a forum is an easy process, there are decent hosts, well price (some even free) with better software. I've been involved in a break away forum before. I assure you while this might bother cn and co a bit, the forum will endure, eventually other members will become prominent and cycling news will continue. Meanwhile this breakaway forum will eventually wither and struggle for activity; that's not fair actually, with the nature of cycling it is plausible to believe for consistent activity. But the inflow of new members will be a factor, and in my experience other problems can arise from more 'personal' directed forums. However at the same time there is also something very nice about the smaller personal forums also :p

Again if we are to be united on this issue we all need to do it at the same time which means for the Americans maybe doing their protest through some of the 15th of January.

Here's my suggestion for the time

10am (16th Jan) - 10am (17th Jan) AEDT
6pm (15th Jan) - 6pm (16th Jan) EST
3pm (15th Jan) - 3pm (16th Jan) PST
12am (16th Jan) - 12am (17th Jan) CET
11pm (15th Jan) - 12am (17th Jan) GMT
7am (16th Jan) - 7am (17th Jan) WST

This is merely a suggestion but not posting at the same time is a better idea.

The times are above for those who want to know. I tried to make themmm as reasonable as possible for everyone and still fit in with the Tour Down Under.

Oh I love a good protest (except that one that ended with guns coming out...old story). But hey, count me in! So, for me (PST), it's Jan 15, 3pm for 24 hrs? I could do that standing on my head. And, I really hope that it works...d*mn ads.
Here's my question. If the ads are still here when we return on Tuesday, what's our next step?

Reading the forum on my phone just now, the in-line ads seem to be gone. Anyone else noticed this?

Pretty much how i feel. Do not care about the ads, doubt i would move on because of them but seeing as other posters seem to feel strongly about it am happy to join in a protest out of respect to them.

but cannot see it lasting more than one day as, like Timmy, my job sucks and i really need something to distract me during the day

Not really too smart about time-zones!

Never mind. I see them now. :(

Agh Max...them d*mn ads are playing tricks on us! First you see 'em, then you don't. Once they're a scantily clad beauty, then she suddenly turns into an ointment ad. If it can change forms and disappear at will, then it can suck blood and eat human brains, too!
It's the cyber CHUPACABRA, I tell you!

ACF has structured it so that CET is the reference point for the 16th. "12am (16th Jan) - 12am (17th Jan) CET"

You're CET, yes? If so, avoid coming here at all on the 16th.

i think its about a bit more than the ads. The fact that the unpaid workers who keep this forum afloat werent warned in advance about them. And then they cant even respond to the issue

The forum is that unimportant to them that they are willing to fill it with as many adverts as you see on a warez site, and more than you see on most bittorrent sites. The fact they are having to use multiple agencies as they are beyond what google ads allow per page..

besides nothing ever happens on a monday. :D

I will try to unoccupy the forum in an hours time (it's nearly 11pm on the 15th in Melbourne), and do so for a bit over a day, but only because:

A) Not enough interest has been shown in my awesome chess thread, and
B) It's the time of that oh so riveting race the Tour Down Under (full of King stages), rather than say the middle of the TDF, Giro or Vuelta :)

I have certainly noticed the increase in advertising on the forum, and whilst a little annoying, it wouldn't stop me coming here long term. It would have to get REALLY bad for me to abandon these boards.

Well young lady, you'll be joining Dim and me (just two examples) by abstaining from the forum during the CET hours from midnight tonight, Sunday, till midnight on Monday night.

Clear?;)

Okay, so I just went through this whole thread. Can I try to summarize?

Trigger issue: Ads are in threads and are somewhat annoying because they show us unattractive women and other things we don't want to see.

Larger, underlying issue: No one has listened to us when we've complained about this, just like they don't listen about anything.

So that second part is understandable. At first I thought it was just about the ads and I couldn't understand, because when they started it was just kind of like 'huh, ads' and then I used my scroll pad to move past them. This whole 'respect' thing is a bit more substantial.

I'm generally really supportive of do-it-yourself initiatives, and would probably be happy to migrate to another site if it was user-friendly and full of some of the bright folks that post here (of course, with that comes the prolific posters who mostly bicker with each other over how they always talk about their favourite riders, but I guess there's no way around that). On the other hand, the completely indifferent attitude taken by the powers that be here has, in my opinion, contributed to a forum that is pretty open in terms of what you can talk about.

In the end, I'm personally happy to just ignore ads I'm not interested in, just like I do for posts by posters I'm not interested in. But if people are keen on boycotting the forum, I'm all for solidarity.

Summary: the off-season gets pretty boring sometimes; you gotta make your own fun.

I finally bothered to install adblock and now the in-thread ads are gone. So is the banner at the top of every page, and so are the ads on the right side. None of which bothered me. Future Pub FAIL.
