It'll be a wrench as I'm a heavy reader / lurker, but I'm boycotting this whole site from mid-day Sunday UK time for 48 hours.

BTW after a bit of experimentation, adding the text below to Adblock Plus in Firefox got rid of the ads. It took a few clicks (Filter Preferences - Custom Filter tab - Add Filter then paste the text)
forum.cyclingnews.com##DIV[class="outbrain_box"]

Finally, following TSFs comments, I'm going to work out how change settings in Adblock to allow ads on sites I wish to support. A drop in the ocean probably, but it seems the right thing to do

While I am personally not bothered so much by the ads, I will support the industrial action out of solidarity, considering I believe this thread serves as a proper ballot.

That said, I am not particularly hopeful about any results from strike. And if the ads represent such a significant deterrant for some members to visit this site I believe moving the community is, sadly, the only way to go.

Again if we are to be united on this issue we all need to do it at the same time which means for the Americans maybe doing their protest through some of the 15th of January.

Here's my suggestion for the time

10am (16th Jan) - 10am (17th Jan) AEDT
6pm (15th Jan) - 6pm (16th Jan) EST
3pm (15th Jan) - 3pm (16th Jan) PST
12am (16th Jan) - 12am (17th Jan) CET
11pm (15th Jan) - 12am (17th Jan) GMT
7am (16th Jan) - 7am (17th Jan) WST

This is merely a suggestion but not posting at the same time is a better idea.

If you've selected a date for a boycott, who cares if big events unfold on that day? Isn't that exactly what you would want, some silence at such a hectic time to reinforce your point? Those types of threads live for months anyway. I'm sure anyone who would want to boycott this forum for 24 hrs could resist the urge to post. Imagine 24 hrs without reading my pearls of wisdom... not that much of a loss, is it? My point is, you're either in or you're out. Waffling on a date or inserting 'what if' clauses before you even start just makes the whole boycott idea look silly.

I will refrain from visiting the site from 4pm the 15th til 4pm the 16th...
not a peek!
I'm going to sneak in at night and post nude pics of myself in every single thread just to see if anyone's cheating, then delete them just before the end of the strike. :D

One thing I can assure you of is that Dan has been aware of all of the implications of this issue since the moment he was informed that the ads had been added to the site
Implication being that we all set our Adblock to remove them and as a result all the other ads that CN relies on for revenue. Genius!

Mate - you need to read this thread again. It has been made abundantly clear that this decision is being made by Future Publilshing and NOT Dan and CN. And yes, Dan is aware that people will just use Adblock, etc.

And yes, everyone is well aware that FP are being idiots about this

I don't care about ads about pro tips to join the Mile High Club, I just want them at the bottom of the page and not in the threads.

I can read perfectly well.

I don't doubt that the decision was taken by a bean counter at FP. That decision has implications for many people. I would hope that, as a person in a position of authority within the FP empire, Mr Benson conveys the negative effect their actions will have. Adblock is one, boycott of their other publications is another. I will not be buying any of their products until they remove these hideously invasive "adverts" from the forum.

If my employers introduced a policy that provoked such a response from our customers I'd be doing them, my employers, a disservice by not raising it. I just hope he is similarly minded.

Alright Mate?

ads inside threads

Hoping I have created a useful series of poll options on this topic.
Make your opinion clear here but add any comments in the other existing thread on the topic so the conversation doesn't get split.

+++ on-topic posts here will be deleted (or moved to that thread)
+++ off-topic posts, etc, will be treated accordingly

+++ if you miss a genuine alternative option not covered by the above, PM Martin!

Why should we care if there are profits? We want what we want and when we don't get it there will be consequences.

OK guys, we're all frustrated and getting tired - you guys, mods (we are making VERY long hours at the moment with all this going on)-, and the non-appearance of an official response isn't helping AT ALL, I get that, but please keep our frustration directed at the people in the driving seat about this.

There is a lot we can't say, but I did try to hint early on to direct our frustration towards the people that need convincing and are in a position to alter the policy, and to pass onto Dan anything you want to be brough to the attention of those people.

He will pass that on. Don't misunderstand silence by him, or noty showing up in the forum, on this issue, for not bothering or not caring about it, or not being actively dealing with it, or not understanding the issues or your feelings.

There are several issues that are entangles with this that you can address hinm on too, as the CN-guy... but read between the lines in our mod posts, please.

I added a poll thread.

As it says, dont put any comments there, just answer the poll question. There is plenty of space in the current thread for discussion of the poll, etc. It needs to stay clean that way so that it is easier to present the topic to FP.

Can anyone seeing this poll please vote and if it doesn't work, PM me right away so I can re-open the thread.

I am working on the assumption that a closed thread doesn't mean a closed poll.

PM to Francois just sent - now I can vote, and did. I have no problem with cycling related ads (even in a broad sense) at the bottom or side of the page. The principle that's at stake here is the nature of these new adds, and their placement in the middle of pages between posts. That does not happen on any of the other forums I frequent.

I could have mentioned the stupidly sexist nature of these adds, but then I'd be opening myself up to charges of hypocrisy in view of BoB.:D

So I didn't.

None of those poll options covers my opinion.

Surprised you think that.

Essentially the poll says that you would be willing to accept one of the positions and move on, or leave. the options cover broadly everything from leave them as they are through to they must be at the bottom of the page and must be cycling related... what other position shoud have been covered?

what the hell is going on here? Just saw the first post to this poll by ACF saying none of these poll options included his opinion. Now his post is gone missing???

Anyway, I agree with that.

Look. We already got ads in the right hand margin on the webpage. There's plenty of space there for Future Publishing to put ads there under the ones we already get... thereby not taking up space previously occupied by posts.
