only if you work in Advertising / Marketing and a full time BS operator working for Specialised?

must be a bitter pill to swallow for Specialized if Cav and Sagan come back to them and say "nah, I'll take the older version please, this new one isn't doing it for me"

No kidding. I think Specialized are potentially capable of some excellent engineering, but they still can't help being caught in the marketing-driven spin-cycle. Not as bad as SRAM or FSA, but still.....

agree
considering the amount of money they can invest in R & D (along with professional lying AKA as Marketing and Advertising) they are much more capable than the less flush bike manufacturers who pretty much just follow their lead and copy as close as they legally can.

SRAM - what will become?

I'd say they're as bad. When you look at their marketing spiel you wonder how the poor teams with sponsors that don't have aero bikes (Cannondale, Bianchi, Focus, Argon 18, Orbea etc) are able to compete

Those were exquisitely beautiful, like Michelangelo himself had hewn them from a single block of Carrara aluminium, ...but they stopped about as effectively as:

Yeah, they weren't much good, apparently. Beautiful, though.

I use them everyday on my Merckx. Last gen, 5 pivot, when set up right, don't make noise and stop. NOT the power of modern dual pivots but they work....and look grand!!

Yeah, they weren't much good, apparently. Beautiful, though.

that has been my experience with Campy on my own bikes
i tried hard to love it but set her free
we don't do much of it in the shop these days

looking at the cost of Super Record 11 it's a tough sell
this stuff is expensive in NZ even if you buy online which many are doing with group sets these days
the price difference is too much to ignore no matter how loyal you are to your LBS

i love the older stuff and will retro fit my Bianchi Pista SS when i find a buyer for some of the organs and children i no longer need

BN - you got a pic of that Merckx you feel like sharing

I'll post some pix later but here's the EPS Plumbing I did almost 18 months ago. Charged the battery 3 times in 18 months.

Obviously you feel the need to keep trying to put me down and for what reason? Can you explain why you only interject in my posts when you feel like you can insult me?
Carry on with your digs. Lets see how well that goes for you.

You really can't see the humour in carbon fibre jockey wheels, can you? I think I get it that this whole "lightness" thing is a hobby for you, but that doesn't mean the rest of us can't laugh about it. OK, our amusement might be at some cost, but think of the greater good!

If the posts were Jokes about jockey wheels or my weight weenie bike or even me riding in my big ring then I have no issue. But from the very outset I was called a liar " I don't believe you climb in your 53t" and comments were all of a insulting nature
I can take a joke and you can make has many jokes as you like about carbon jockey wheels [I only use 1 the other 1 is plastic] You can make jokes and say what you like about me bike if there funny I will laugh and enjoy the banter but its been deliberate attacking me and being insulting. You only have got the responses you have deserved and in one case a ban.
I'm happy to move on and be civil and help with advice if I can or happy to recieve advice, but like French fry's post shows ....you can't.

imho opinion mr willings

you are drawing a very long bow

so to speak

to say that i/ we/ they don't believe you climb in the 53 is hardly a comment of insulting nature

i don't believe in jesus christ santa claus of the easter bunny
but there are many people who do

do they feel insulted because of my beliefs

insult
verb
speak to or treat with disrespect or scornful abuse.

noun
a disrespectful or scornfully abusive remark or act.

please
for the record
I am not trying to insult anyone here

any chance
of getting back to aero speak

To be fair, with the following sprockets at the back, 23, 25, 28, 32, the gears available in the big ring are:

62", 57", 51", 45".

I can climb pretty much anything up to 10-13% for extended periods or 15+% for short bursts on a 70" fixed and I am really, really slow. Not sure what Ray has out back.

Ray also lives in London, I'm sure there is some short steep stuff but it's really not noted for it's massive climbs. Box Hill anyone?

The guy just seems to like his bikes and likes talking about them, I don't get why so many seem to be getting personally insulted by him

OK, I'll retract the "don't believe you climb long steep hills in the 53t" and replace it with "In my opinion you are doing yourself a great disservice if you climb steep, long hills at extremely low cadences. If I came across such a person when out riding, I would think poorly of their abilities as a cyclist. I would be of the opinion that they would be much faster and their knees would be happier if they used your gears correctly".

(PS: And if I've ever been banned I didn't notice it)

I honestly don't think I have ever "insulted" you or put you down, I just find your posts amusing at times.

I find it funny that an admitted weight weinie (and there is nothing wrong with that) says this about aero bikes:

"Aero smero ,,,its all about selling the latest model for the fat geezer stack spacer crowd."

as if reducing weight is the only noble objective, any other preferences are to be scorned. If you don't see the irony in that, so be it.

Just like being upset when someone passes you when you are climbing in a huge gear. If you don't want to be passed, change gears! Otherwise carry on with your 53/11. I don't say you are wrong for climbing in the gear you want, it is a free world - but I find it strange when you complain that others don't compromise their rides in order not to hurt your feelings.

The reason I think aero bikes are just a selling point and nothing else is the fact that to get the sort of claims gained you may as well ride a full TT bike. In the real world you are not going to get the very tiny tiny gains claimed
Unless you are going to ride a bike on empty road go back and ride it again with no stops or no cars or no people...the chances of getting the tiny tiny aero benefit is virtually non existent. maybe you like to ride in a wind tunnel. So I scorn it because you are paying for gains they you will not have in the real world.
It has nothing to do with the bike I'm riding. I have never claimed that you or anyone else should ride a light bike. You ride the bike you like and I respect your choice. You are just making assumptions about me. Look at my posts and see what I have said about bikes and parts and you will see that you are wrong. So no irony just the way you want to perceive me.

The thread I posted about getting dropped was not about a bash to my ego or my gears, it was about the way other riders can be annoying and behave in a smug elite way. Take a look at the post again and quite a few people got the point of the thread and posted their on similar experiances. You and others immediately tried to use it as a insult.

I never said you were banned...
You are also making a lot of assumptions in your description about the way I ride. They are most likely based on your ability or the people you ride with.
FWIW I can tell you, your description bears no reality to the way I ride my bike or the condition of my knees.

I can tell you that your assumptions are wrong.

The initial point of saying why I ride in my 53t was to explain why I put a down-tube shifter on my bike. That's all. It seemed to have hit a nerve. I have no idea why a few are so concerned about the gears I ride in.
11x27 at back. Box hill is not exactly Alp d Huez but there are some nice climbs about. I go out with my Friends some times ,Essex ,Surrey, etc and they know some pretty decent climbs......I just try and stay with them ,you know plodding away in my big gears :D
