Impressive stuff of Contador today. Hope to see more of that on wednesday and hopefully he can take Nairo with him.
Nah... nairo will not be allowed to be in the break again

I knew he isn't past it....and he rode pretty well with Landa ( the greatest climber in the tour according to much hype on the forum)...Contador had no problem staying with the mighty Landa ....so reports of his demise were very very premature indeed

Expect Quintana & Contador to be up to stuff in the Alps

True, but can they stop an Alberto/Nairo alliance? I for one hope that Nairo sees that he needs Alberto and I can see them planning something together.

Contador does what Contador does. When people start to give up on him, he manages to do something truly great.

I agree he did a good ride today but to say truly great is way over the top. There are a lot of riders who get into breaks everyday but are not classed as truly great but because he does it, it is. He was allowed to get away today but overall he did do a much better ride. Hopefully he can get better now as the race goes on as others around him tire.

He gets the accolades because most of the other riders that are gc contenders are afraid to risk their position in the standings. They rarely initiate any aggressive actions to advance themselves in the gc nor do most of them figure that a stage win is just as good or better than a top 15 placement in the gc. Contador animates, ignites, disrupts and creates chaos where the standard is to just follow. He entertains, which is great for the fans...well some of the fans.

I think that entertaining and his reputation of being that kind of rider is also something that motivates him a lot. It makes the risk even more worth it. He spoke again today about he wants to enjoy the race and make the rest of the race enjoyable as possible for the fans.

"my goal now is to make a spectacle"

With that aim, he can't really lose from this position. And nor can his sponsors. A narrative, whether a valiant but doomed effort or a glorious victory, can be much better for a brand, IMO.

Great ride by Alberto today; this is what we want to see, not trying to follow wheels of the GC guys. Shame he couldn't get his stage win, but once Quintana and Barguil bridged it always looked a long shot. Hopefully he'll be allowed up the road to try again on the Galibier or Izoard stages.

Not very many can stop Quintana & Contador if they unite ...esp the yellow jersey who has a weak team
If they do unite, it will play into the hands of someone who does have a strong team and can take advantage of them working... now who could that be?

Ag2R :D

Contador does not gain anything at all by working with Quintana. Quintana is just a leech sucking the blood out of Contador.

Bravo Alberto, I knew he wasn't that hurt after all :D

This performance really does underline his class, but also the fact that he has become considerably better in short stages compared to the long ones. For good and for worse. But what a spectacle he put him along with Landa, Barguil and Quintana.

Nairo and Alberto to pull off a coup on stage 17 and exchange turns in great friendship on the Telegraphe and Galibier, with never one flick of the elbow required. Alberto does the majority of the work into Serre-Chevalier, after which Nairo allows him to take the stage victory; repayment for Formigal, and for today, as Quintana is now in yellow.

Well, you just never know :D

Alberto will take it pretty easy tomorrow won't he? Then, what about stage 15?

Or does he just stay where he is now until stage 17? I hope that he doesn't deliberately lose time in the coming stages, even if it increases his chances of a stage victory. I want a stage victory, and a decent GC position.

At the very least he needs to finish above Louis Meintjes!

You just have to love the guy! Yesterday was painful, but he refuses to take it lying down! Vamos!
Indeed, Vamos! What worries me tho is Pantano is nowhere to be found: Mollema is fighting tho and could be a real asset on stage 17 to Serre Chevalier. Guy deserves respect, I hope he can deliver.

Alberto Contador. Will we ever see the likes again?

Im positive!

A few years from now, when the dark days of science and controlled racing is sucking the sport to a standstill, there will come some new hotshot who have studied the great annals of the sport and have studied the blueprint of the great one. Even now the future grandfathers will dust off their memories and tell stories to their grandchilden about Alberto the great.

And they will be like: "Hell yeah, its me, that is the sort of legacy i want to carve out for myself."

The spirit of Contador may not present itself directly but it will never die.

You can always root for Landa to win this year's Tour. It will instantly make him into a legend.
Landa is already a bit of an icon, not on the scale of Alberto, obviously but still has much more of a following than a normal climber that's only won a handful of races. It's the potential that Landa has that makes him so appealing, people always wonder if he has what it takes to win a race such as the Tour and now we're getting the answer.

It will take some time before Landa comes even remotely close to the legendary "Pistolero", but he's giving it a go.

Landa is a rider in the mold of Jimenez, a special kind of climber who does his own thing and is mythical on his day. Bad luck has derailed him before, but being this strong after being that strong in the Giro shows what he is made off.
