The problem is that he is consistently underperforming. The only glimpse we have had of AC of old (since his return) has been Fuente De. No sign at all this year.

What was all that nonsense about breaking training records? False hope for his fans

it was before Fuentes De, so I think is solid enough.

Seems the days of Bertie dancing on the pedals are in the past :( This year he hasn't even shown Vuelta 2012 level :(

Hopefully he will find some good form soon. His team as well; so far they are all under performing.....

Looks like they are saving them selves for the tour...but Im also a hopeless optimist ;)

They are miles off Sky aren't they. Its not looking good just now.

He looks cooked most of the time. He will probably still finish on the Podium at the Tour but will get whipped by Froome in both the TTs and the Mountains.

Really? After a flu? People will go deaf, but we should wait until the Tour. I also want to see Alberto to win, but his main goal is the Tour. If he losses it because he will be weak, then we can say it's a problem.

Oh, and one more thing, the Basque tour has a few stages also left.

Contador's ride was solid and only Porte can challenge him in the TT unless Talansky or TJVG can do something.

Sure has, but I doubt he win this, optimist or not, I think he lacks a few % in form because of his flu, its a very hard race, I still see Porte take this, no matter how pathetic that result would be.

Posssibly, although AC took a minute from Porte during ITT in the Vuelta last year. Promising at least:)

Porte rode the tour that year and this is a different Porte.

No indication whatsoever.

That was last years Porte; not the new, improved more Borgish Porte....

Maybe it's a bit early but I'm starting to think Contador might be past his best. He's still very good, but not that category above he was before. That seems destined for the Skyborgs now

My last straw of hope is that Contador said a few months ago that he wants to be better than what he was in the giro of 2011. And he broke his training record last year.

Maybe he has a 'lesser' year too? It happens sometimes.

Then again right now in each MTF i just know Contador is not gonna win it. Oh boy that used to be different. At some point there were even complaints cause Contador didn't win by a hugh margin (paris-nice '10, mende). Those were the days...

It's too early to write him off. let's wait till the Tour. He didn't do badly today. You can't expect Contador to win every stage race he enters SKYborg style. He never did.

Unless some hungerknock or Dauphine nothing pretty much stopped him.

Usually i've a lot of confidence considering contador but right now i'm almost as bad as laflo.

That's seems pretty much a fact now. It doesn't mean he can't still win big races, but the times that he could drop anyone anywhere on any climb he wanted, and increase his lead in a time trial are past.

Everythings you said could be true, however in this race he is still in the running for the win. Was it ever his strategy to win this particular stage? He certainly did not loose time on Porte and gained on Sanchez, so tomorrow could be the stage that will show us where he stands

By being consistent, the way he won the 2008 Giro without ever being great.

Let's not kid ourselves, it wasn't his strategy to lose today. If he could have gone faster, he would have. Maybe he'll be better tomorrow, but today wasn't a 'strategy'.

Jeez, it's not like he's getting dropped for big time. He's just not as sharp as we're used to. That and it's only April 3.
