The only question is - who's next Sky's domestique who'll saddle Contador up?

Wait, who's getting saddled up?
I haven't realized the depth of despair.
Do you hasve anything else?
Something fresher?

Yep, Froome finished 28 mins behind stage winner today, is that fresh enough?

So, he was 5 second s closer to Contador than to Porte?
That's the freshness I'm looking for!

Once he loses the excess weight he'll be flying ;) ;) ;) :p

Ah, well surely this day will be marked in cycling history with peak Porte magnificiently outsprinting overweight AC by 5 secs in the last 100 meters after wheelsucking his teammates.

28 minutes? Holy crap I'm surprised he even kept pedaling, boy has guts. He needs to fast track his next TUE, Zarzoli is back I hear.

Let's face it kids, SaxoFail today. They used themselves up to early, and left AC to fend for himself from way to far out. I hold Tinkov responsible, he is the jerk that has everyone on that team turning themselves inside out in fear of their jobs.

Berto gave it everything he had, today it just wasn't quite enough. But he will be better for the Giro and I hope Tinkov doesn't get on his case for fading today. I don;t think that will be productive.

It wasn't like that, don't be silly.
Contador let Porte pass him after making a statement couple of hundreds of meters lower down the slope.
That's the proper interpretation.

Nope it's not, just another way to look at things.
Anyway, peak Porte is gonna get one of the biggest win in his career with an incredible margin of 5 seconds over alberto chubby contador, tell us how excited you are about this emotional, historical victory?

I'm not happy. Bertie is looking a bit laboured a bit sluggish.
The first Race/test of the year he looked great beat Froome in the ITT then dropped him on the first up hill stage then the next day he looked slow and lethargic and he has pretty much looked like that since.
I hope Bertie is just pacing his form. This time last year Bertie was magnificent.
He looked unbeatable,so as a big Bertie fan I will only breathe a sigh of relief when he drops everyone on the first big stage at the Giro.
beaten by Porte ,,,YUUUUUUKKKK I don't care how many seconds F%%%%%%% Yuk

Stay calm and relaxed ray j :) chubby Bertie dropped Porte. His attack looked powerful, 30s full throttle. He ran out of gas eventually but in the Giro that won't happen. He cannot be in the same form as last year because he's aiming for the Giro. Last year he had a mini peak around this time then recovered in May.. no time for that now :)

It sucks he was beaten by Porte but we should not lose confidence :)

Peak Porte ,wtf people are delusional.Porte is not peaking for the freaking Volta a Catalunya.Porte as Contador didn't give a *** about this race they just tested their current levels,Giro will be a different business.I'm very happy that Porte is in good condition, but still Contador is the man to beat, his got the wins and the experience in GT's.

I feel your pain re. Porte - or anyone from Sky, to be honest. But I'm not unhappy about AC's form - he should be doing nicely by the Giro, and his doing nicely is clearly a different level from the contenders today.

I don't like AC losing; it hurts to watch it. But that's part of the deal for trying for the double. I'll only worry if he looks quite so chunky in May.

The only thing that does worry me is the state of the team in general. Not impressed by Maika (not a huge fan of his anyway), and generally, they don't seem to have the legs. Not so worrying for the Giro, tbh, but for the Tour after the Giro it'll be made a billion times harder if the team isn't in rock solid form and with high morale.

Some people here are funny. There is no need (bar crashes or mechanicals) to worry about Porte in the Giro. This race doesn't reflect what either one of them will look like (form wise) in the Giro. IMO AC will be much better in the Giro and Porte will only be a little better. Add to that the fact that Porte has yet to prove himself over 3 weeks. All is well.

well considering Porte got towed to Bertie by his team mate. And Bertie has to fend himself that's not too bad. 5 seconds from Porte and 2 seconds from Froome. Still Ouch! Porte seems close to peak. I wonder how he can be effective on the Tour. At 3km attacked by Bertie should be a reminder what he will be in the Giro. He just can't sustained it yet. (since he has to carry his fat around). Yeah, I feel the same as you guys. Sucks got beaten by the used to be domestique.

Holly cow! Froome was dropped? He must be ill or something. The chest infection must be that worse. Or he is deliberately pacing himself to be flying at the Tour. At least, he and Bertie have a very interesting form so far. Looks great at their first race. Then plummeting. Then look descent (in the case of Froome, worst).

I'm about as far from a Froome fan girl as physically possible, but if he's had the chest infection I've had, it's no wonder he was so far behind. But it reinforces the sense of fragility about him.

Now if only Oleg would let the dust settle and recognise that this season is about the long game, then hopefully we'll see the team pull together a bit.

Not saying that Porte is peaking right now, but out of curiosity, how do you compare Porte's form to Contadors?

Personally i think it's something like Porte 95 % and Contador 80 % right now.

Think Porte will come into the Giro flying and fade big time in the 2nd and 3rd week.

I'd guess something like that. Here's hoping that next 20% is the 20% that will kill off everyone, day after day, on the high peaks.

Contador might be at 80%, but of his racing weight. Form wise he's at around 90%.
Porte around 95%.

What are you babbling about, weight and form are linked, if he's off his racing weight, he can't be at 90% form wise and he's certainly not.

Percentages can be deceiving in a GT. An 80 or 90% Contador can be devastating in the third week.

That is the big difference between Contador and the Tejays, Atapumas, Portes, Martins, etc. The third week.

Otherwise a lot of riders are close in form right now. Hec, even Kiri can beat Contador if he shed some pounds.

1 week races are not GT's.
