Hmm. Maybe he just realized he didn't have enough to win anyway, so dropped off. Weird place to drop, 300 meters from the summit.
The way he spectacularly cracks is almost unique amongst top GC riders. He must just ignore his power meter and dig ridiculously deep into the red to try to follow wheels.Carols said:Geez he totally blew himself up![]()

At least he attacked unlike the others. Props to him.
Forever The Best said:The way he spectacularly cracks is almost unique amongst top GC riders. Not sure that's anything to shout about; it was a terrible time to attack from a tactical viewpoint. Aru and Bardet didn't attack until the last 250m; one of them is now in yellow and the other won a stage. While Contador just ended up blowing up.
DFA123 said:At least he attacked unlike the others. But if they'd attacked earlier they could have won much more time. Perhaps after the race we'll look back on this stage as the only time Froome was vulnerable and the others let him get away with it.
LaFlorecita said:Not sure that's anything to shout about; it was a terrible time to attack from a tactical viewpoint. And that's exactly what's wrong with cycling right now. Thank god Alberto is different.DFA123 said:Maybe, or perhaps they would have blown up like Contador. I think you take a 25-30 second advantage on a day that was 99% controlled by the Sky train.
He is the biggest fighter I've seen in cycling. Even our commies praised him several times for his fighting spirit46&twoWheels said:Is Contador the best ever Lion's heart?![]()

It is certainly wrong with cycling. But I think the problem is mostly the strength of the Sky train, not the fact that the other challengers arent going on suicide-type attacks.LaFlorecita said:And that's exactly what's wrong with cycling right now. I expected worse after all those crashes and he spent so many kilometers hanging at the back. He could follow the pace for a long time but unfortunately had to drop just before the top. His loss would have been quite a bit less if he had been able to stay with them till the summit, but either way he was just empty on the final ramp. Interestingly though, I didn't see any grimacing. He just didn't look comfortable at all on the bike.Red Rick said:Seemingly marginal improvement.
Fact that he's the only one attacking early is incredibly telling.
Sure, but you don't attack when there is still a longish 6-7% average climb left to come. Aru had the right idea I think on PdBF and again today. Attack when the gradients are steep and so drafting is of little help.LaFlorecita said:And we've seen many times that this train can only be derailed by attackingDFA123 said:It is certainly wrong with cycling. Red Rick said:If Contador had done this on a good day, Froome would've been on the ropes early one, and the stage wouldve been crazy. Unfortunately, it was a yolo move and he was brought back by the Kwiatkowski.
No shame in that though. Kwiatkowski is an animal.
