Alberto Contador. Will we ever see the likes again?

You can always root for Landa to win this year's Tour. It will instantly make him into a legend.

Love myself a Landa. He is brilliant.

So take it to the Landa thread :).

Today we celebrate that Alberto still has some life in those legs!

Jip, I am planning my trip to the Giro. It was a mere blip, he is back :)

I will just enjoy every Show he has left to give us without expectation. But I'm considering the Giro myself next year :)

"And for many, the hero of the day, Alberto Contador" they said about him as he approached the finish on top of the Alpe in 2011 after being overtaken by Rolland and Samu Sanchez. And the same can be said about today! :D

I don't think this approached that level. 2011 contador already cracked open the race on the sestrieres stage (pinerrolo?). But when he attacked 100k out on the galibier, no one saw that coming. He cracked voeckler and if not for a mechanical may have cracked Evans. Not quite the same today from even further back.

I think today ought to lay to bed some of the whinings about Sky/Froome kicking Contador when he's down not going to let him share in the limelight. Not only did they let him, they helped him along! Landa took more of the lead than Contador did when they were together.

Wut?!?!? Panda took the lead on the last climb, but Bertie was the one pacing the first two.

You weren't watching the same broadcast I was! Landa was in the lead way more than Contador.

Today was as good as it gets. He may have decided the yellow jersey here and at least he looked much stronger towards the end than some of the past attempts.

Contador pulled the most on the first two climbs of the day. Panda pulled the large majority of the third, and did no work on the first climb,".

Not that I think that Sky "kick Contador when he's down" but what really should be laid to rest is the bs about him being "irrelevant". If they are seen as kicking him when he's down it's because he has relevance and is seen as dangerous. If he were irrelevant Sky would've let him go rather than sending their chief lieutenant with him. They would've been foolish to simply let him disappear up the rode unchaperoned.

As I have yet to watch the stage, other than highlights and reading the play-by-play of the forum comments for the stage I can't comment on who took the most turns.

Landa and Sky had dual purposes and helping Contador was only a consequence of them advancing Landa in the gc thus making him more of a threat to Froome's immediate rivals and making those same rivals and their teams work to limit the damage.

Totally on point! Contador is the best rider in the world on these stages, probably. He has shown that many times. I wonder if he trains differently nowadays.
But i don't like this attitude from nairo... he can't be always waiting for contador to create carnage. He has to create his own opportunities

You know what I wrote. I disagree, but I won't argue further.

But, if it had been anybody working with him but Landa (boy! Panda sure is a clever name!), Contador would have been in 4th place, not third. Is there anybody worse than Landa in a sprint!

Thats not fair, he has the same intentions as Contador today, just a little later on Agnes (which was strategically the right place to strike).. Contador didn't really help him today, rather, he made the chase very hard. Both deserve huge probs.

You're completly right but what I am saying is that he was waiting for contador to do his move and why he didn't attack first? Why he was waiting for contador's move, this my point. But hatts off for him, he was strong enough to bridge the gap almost alone against contador/landa

So what. That is a snapshot in time. Landa was in the lead most of the time my broadcast showed them. Also, they showed them in descent a couple of times. I don't ever remember seeing Contador in the lead then.

He didn't wait for Contador to attack, he was presumably always going to attack when he did, no matter who was up the road. Contador just decided to go sooner, and was already up the road.

Contador made the initial break, and led all the way up the first climb. Landa was, at that stage, just being a good domestique and following.

On the second climb, Landa started to come through a bit.

By the 3rd climb, Quintana and Barguil were catching up, and Landa had enough of a lead to make it worth his while pushing for GC time. But Contador had a possible stage win to think about.

The priorities of both men changed over the course of the stage, so their workloads changed. If Q and Barguil hadn't bridged, Contador and Landa would probably have worked 50-50 all the way to Foix with Bertie taking the stage.
