I do wonder on how competitive he could still be. Top 10?
He’d have to focus on a stage race exclusively and get lucky to get a top 10 currently. If he cared about them more versus winning, he still could have rode for another 2-4 years and gotten decent results after 2017. I don’t think all the close calls and seconds in 2017 helped at all in his thoughts for staying active.

I think he may have had a habit of burning himself out, especially later on when he went all out in every race trying to get wins, and then he'd crash in the Tour and it would just be over.

Nobody really chases GC in 4 stage races in February and then Tirreno/Catalunya/Itzulia like Contador would.

Not a good look likely for specialized. Forced Contador to race with a slower bike at the TDF, while he could use the faster bike at the giro

Absolutely Contador did, he thought he had Pogacar’s stamina, endurance, and recovery.
