Basso can't have seriously thought that he would be able to peak twice AND out climb Contador and A. Schleck to the point that he'd have a buffer large enough to make up for his inevitable loss in the ITT to Contador.

Being a pro athlete, he probably has the kind of self-confidence that's necessary to believe in all kinds of unlikely positive outcomes. Winning a tough Giro probably caused some seismic peak in that self-belief ;-)

When was the last time you congratulated a Spaniard on a win, and didn't inject doping accusations or collusion allegations into the conversation regardless of it not being the Clinic? Or is that not pulling people down when they succeed or do well, because they happened to be Spanish?

I have not gone on about it in ages except when I made a joke which used smilies about the spaniards making Cadel crash. People have joked about that with me. With the spanish doping I have made my point about their doping in the clinic and haven't said anything for ages in the professional road racing sub forum. I made a point about Cadel being clean in Fleche thread, vino coming back is not good for cycling in the liege thread (which I was backed up by certain posters) and in the giro thread I made comments about basso in the mortirolo giro thread which I apologised about because it was stupid. But I guess you never post silly things or type things that are wrong or hypocritical because you are perfect and have the sunshine shining out of your ****!

Cadel is a good rider, but too late to be great

Levi Leipheimer said he hurt himself by trying to stay with Andy and Alberto too long. Like somebody or not but the truth is the truth. In the tour the strongest riders emerge in the mountains. I like Lance but this year he wasn't one of them, crashes or not. Cadel was no threat before his crash either. Alberto and Andy are on another plane were the riders of old in their prime could ride with them but at the moment they have no peer in the mountains. Andy does have to improve his TT though to be complete.
As I said earlier though, trash talking is human nature and inherent in sports. Intimidation, getting into somebody's head, getting someone off their game and reacting to what you do are tactics that can be used. Dale Earnhardt, Michael Jordan and John McEnro all used it. Andy isn't in that league though, don't get me wrong, but even lesser players can trash talk. It will turn on him if he does it to Alberto and does not back it up with a win. It only works the next time you meet an opponent if you backed it up by winning and proviing you were right.
