"another interesting piece I found on the UCI and president Pat McQuaid " Thread

Wow, just wow. Just the other day an official spokesperson for Pat says the Swiss didn't pull their nomination. Now the Swiss come out and say, oh yes we did, and like 5 months ago!!!!!

Unbelievable this guy. He has to go, badly.

Another absurd interview with Pat.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cycling/23778981

Claims credit for everything.....then says if they don't catch someone it is WADA's fault. He claims that the UCI target tested Armstrong after his 2001 "Positive" for EPO......but this is a lie. He was tested the minimum number of times possible.

From the front page article on CN:

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/swiss-cycling-president-resigns-over-mcquaid-affair

"Swiss Cycling nominated McQuaid for the UCI presidency, on the grounds that he was a member of the federation as he lived in Switzerland."

The wording of this is strange. We've been told that McQuaid is a member of the Swiss federation, but this wording seems to imply he never actually joined and it was just assumed he was a member based on residency. Is this correct?

If so I can have my British Cycling membership for free just because I live here?

If you were wondering why the Swiss Fed would embarrass themselves to defend Pat I suggest reading Gerard's blog

what an excellent blog entry by Vroemen.
really strong.
it really is all politics, including the swiss withdrawel of pats nomination.

i also like what he says about cookson:
Well, we don’t know. We know very little of Cookson’s plans, since his manifesto lacked in specifics. On top of that, he seems to have changed position on several important topics in recent months. On truth and reconciliation and women’s racing for example. This is OK, changing your mind is a subtle way of showing you’ve gotten smarter, but we must hope that a clear direction emerges. Otherwise, the changes smack of opportunism.

Got to agree, excellent article. Very well thought out and raised a few things many probably hadn't realised, such as the reasons, other than financial pressure, for the removal of the Swiss nomination.

Betting closed on UCI presidency race.

Paddy Power ‏@paddypower

We've suspended betting on the next UCI President after some decent bets on Brian Cookson. Looks like Pat McQuaid's goose is cooked!

The UCI executive board voted to not take the McQuiad Nomination case to CAS

This is good, now Cookson has a list of people to fire when he gets in charge

http://www.velonation.com/News/ID/1...r-McQuaids-interpretation-of-Article-511.aspx

tanx RR.

but it's bad news though if mcquaid manages to send out enough brown envelopes before the election and actually get re-elected.
any rumors on what his chances are?

talking about brown envelopes, me thinks (but correct me if I'm wrong) mcquaid has rather firm IOC backing (or at least firmer than cookson), by means of the verbruggen-rogge link.

Hard to say where McQuaid sits with the IOC. He was push (Resigned) from a key committee that selects sites for future games.

Ultimately though the decision sits with the Feds, not the IOC

The 4 members of the UCI executive board are McQuaid, Hee Wook Cho (Korea), Renato Di Rocco (Italy), Artur Lopes (Portugal).

Hee Wook Cho is the President of the Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC). ACC together with Malaysia proposed the nomination rule change. ACC publicly supports McQuaid in the election. Not a surprise that Cho voted to reject the CAS review.

A known McQuaid supporter is involved in proposing a dodgy retrospective amendment to nomination rules that benefits McQuaid and then takes part in a vote that decides no independent review is required of the questionable nomination process. Seems legit...

A Q for French or American cycling historians, which is relevant to the interpretation of Art 51: The journalist and race promoter Victor Breyer was the first secretary of the original UCI (the one the UK were excluded from). Though a French native and resident in France he represented the interests of the US fed at the UCI. Was his membership of the US fed honourary or does anyone have a copy of his membership card?

far before my time.....but didn't the UCI start in 1900 and what is now USAC start in 1920? In 1900 it would have been League of American Wheelmen. I think Victor used to bring US riders over to ride the Buffalo Velodrome, perhaps that is the connection?

He probably just made it up

Surely it would only be relevant if 'Rule 51', or a direct equivalent was in existence. I would assume the constitution or statutes have been altered or updated over time, particularly when the UCI took back in FIAC & FICP back in the early 90's.
