If this comment is a reply to the original post, then you don't get it. You must be part of the problem, learn some manners, just because they do it in other sports doesn't make it ethically acceptable, mark

From the thread title I thought it was going to be a post about Freiburg Mick, and wondered why it wasn't in the clinic.

Phew! Good to see this isn't a clinic thread after all. You definitely have your priorities straight about what's ethically acceptable.

Yes but it is a little bit more understandable in a local, club competition. In an international sport, it is much different imo.

There will be plenty off chances to boo them at the Olympics, when they get dropped on the climb of a speed bump.

Sorry just Rogers. He won't do much. There is no way he will bridge a gap that has a few British riders in it.

Would not boo an Australian rider. But do you think Sky would be happy with him if he helped pull back a breakaway with the Manx Missile in it? The Olympics don't pay that well.

Pahethic.

Booing is nowhere near sportman-like behaviour by fans. And sorry, but it happens mostly in football only...

To the OP: I would hope that your feelings for your nation are strong enough not to be affected by a small number of idiots.

To everyone else: Big surprise! Some fans act irrationally, and "loyalty" exacerbates that. Nothing to see, nothing worth commenting on. Move along please.

This is just uniformed, misguided fans cheering for their national hero. Same thing happened when Voigt helped chase down Ullrich in 2004 - he was booed and called Judas by german fans.

Ullrich defends Voigt

Jan Ullrich has defended his compatriot Jens Voigt, who was on the end of some rather nasty spectator abuse during yesterday's Alpe d'Huez time trial. Voigt was called a "Judas" and a "traitor to the fatherland" by German fans and media after he had sat up in the break and gone back to help CSC and US Postal chase down Ullrich the previous day when the T-Mobile rider attacked with 60 km to go. But Ullrich understood completely that Voigt was merely following orders and doing his job, as he wrote in his diary on T-Mobile's website:

"There is one thing that I want to clear up: The jeering that my buddy Jens Voigt was subjected to yesterday was not pretty. It saddens me that he was sworn at and called a "Judas" and other names. Jens was just doing what any other rider would have done if they were in his situation. There is an unwritten rule in cycling that you always wait for your captain when the race explodes. And things did explode for Basso in that stage! Jens, you did what you had to do!"

It's weird, pro football (soccer) has teams with players from many countries, you'd think people would understand and be used to the idea of countrymen being on opposing teams. Just shameful behavior.

these kind of idiots do not make ME shamed to be Australian. It makes me ashamed that THEY are Australian

It does make me laugh though.

They are upset that 2 Aussie riders are riding for a British team against and Aussie .... who is riding for an American team!!!

If he were riding for Greenedge, then maybe I might understand a tiny bit ... but Cadel himself doesnt ride for the Australian team, he rides for an American team.

It isn't the team nationality per se but the nationality of Wiggins and Froome that is the problem and the fact that Porte and Rogers are riding to stop Cadel from winning.

I thought this thread was going to be about GreenEdge and Cadel's failure at the tour this year. after all the hype, a little disappointing now

Those booing Porte especially may want to consider that Greenedge were negotiating with him, and he chose Sky over em.

Could be viewed as a 'Double betrayal' or maybe a rider looking after his career by going to the best team that suited his goals.

No but Voigt got a lot of abuse thrown at him for hurting Ullrich's chances.

Yes , +1* .

Just look at the Jens Voigt overcomming clip on U tube. There you can see the comments from Jensie . It does rattle the riders and they cant do a thing about it. This is Pro Cycling , and a contract is signed, and its a job. This isnt about nationalities , no matter how much everyone likes to see a winner from their home country.
This sport is hard enough, It doesnt qualify for booing of any sort, with exception to infractions not allowed under the rules . However riding for another team as a pro , is no reason to boo anyone, period : or as Jens would say , POINT .

Well , it doesnt make me laugh. It only shows that there are a large number of people throughout the world that dont know the difference between pro sports and Sports events such as olympics where athletes traditionally represent their home country , outright.
IN cycling where the fans are so close to the riders , it sometimes leads to problems on the road with the fan/athlete interaction with everything from pushing to shoving to setting up a chain reaction crash to thumb tacks , to releasing dogs in the middle of the peloton . You name it , it has probably happened . It would be nice that some of these booing type nutbars get a bit of a reality check and simmer down .

What f**kwit moronic scum, I am disgusted, booing Porte and Rogers, unbelievable, YOU'RE MORONS! I am incredibly proud of all the Australian cyclists in the TdF and if Wiggins is the best this race then congratulations to him, yours truly mark john conley (canberra)

r u on drugs?

Richie & MickRo have a contract with Team Sky. They are paid a salary for their work for Team Sky, you know? These are the lads with the black/blue jerseys, right?

An Cadel is under contract and paid by BMC, a US team riding these ugly bicycles from Switzerland and the red/black jerseys.

Everything fine now, m8?

Hope MickRo or Richie get a medal in the Ldn olympic ITT. Btw, then they will be wearing the Aussie kit, ok? Understood?

The OP may have not made their point clear enough in their choice of words, but they're upset and annoyed not at Porte and Rogers for 'betraying Australia', but at those Australian fans who were booing Porte and Rogers, for making their compatriots look like jingoistic idiots. The OP is on your side.

i'm sure if the roles were reversed and cummings was leading cadel up mountains and putting the UK riders into trouble it would be the same from the brits

I am sure there would be a few.

I was disappointed when Steve C left Sky, but know he has a job to do for his current team.

Whilst he is a Kiwi, I am as pleased as punch that Greg Henderson finally got his tour ride, and even though he led out to a win Greipel over Cav, can share his joy in him doing his job right at the highest level.

Thanks LS; pales into insignificance after the tack throwers, hopefully the policiers apprehend these low-life and 'take them out the back'.
