i think that is the problem. not athletes doping

Or, isn't it a natural inclination for humans to push the envelope to gain an advantage and sometimes it even involves going beyond the norm or what is acceptable if they can do it without any repercussions??

yep. this is right. but we have built up the myth subsequent to this factor. I think the myth comes after, or in is a confluence/dovetailing of both factors

The Australian Crime Commission made the executives of major sports, including Demetriou sign a confidentiality clause.

It would also be like McQuaid telling the head of a cycling team to be careful as the police were investigating their drug use.

So normal behavior by sports officials then?

I have to say its odd that Essendon have been charged for bringing the game into disrepute before any player has been charged with doping. Usually it's the other way around.

Probably not. But at this stage I reckon the AFL has bitten off more than it can chew. So at least it can't be blamed for not trying to give the case against Essendon legs.

Is it not that the myth is the other way around......."we are all doing it fair and square, with ethics, etc.."

Are you suggesting then that doping is not unethical in any context, particularly in the wrong hands.

You see no problem with Froome??

i am not for doping.

most who have followed my career on The Clinic, would know i am resolutely ANTI-D.

but the athletes have decided the norms.

it is only natural then they lie to the public when asked about vexed issues like doping. because the public is taught the myth.

Must have missed this meeting. Remind me later will you......put in diary........NOTE to arrange meeting down at the docks to discuss doping norms with other cyclists. Will invite JV and Froome to discuss what is normal. Start off meeting .... Rhetorical question to Froome ...... you have surpassed all norms, agreed?

The Australian Football League (AFL) has gone thermonuclear *** on Essendon Football Club (EFC) after they refused to roll over:

Specific allegations include that the Bombers:

Engaged in practices that exposed players to significant risks to their health and safety.
Disregarded standard practices involving the Human Resources department when employing Dean Robinson and Stephen Dank.
Failed to devise or implement any adequate system to ensure that all substances were safe and compliant.
Failed to adequately monitor and record the use of substances.
Failed to meaningfully inform players of the substances and obtain their informed consent to the administration of the substances.
Failed to adequately protect the health, welfare and safety of the players.

During the relevant period, the Club caused the following substances to be administered to players at the Club:
Actovegin
Unspecified amino acids
Unspecified multi-vitamins
AOD-9604 creams
AOD-9604 injections
Cerebrolysin
Colostrum
Lactaway
Lube-all-plus
Melatonin
Melanotan II
TA-65
Thymosin Beta 4
Traumeel
Tribulus

Other evidence includes:

Players were being injected with unprecedented frequency.
In November 2011 Stephen Dank conducted private testing of players blood for the prohibited Insulin Growth Factor 1.
Between August and December 2011 the club became aware the program for 2012 was to push the legal limit.
Players continued to receive injections until at least August 5, 2012 despite Mark Thompson ordering Stephen Dank to cease during a meeting mid May.
James Hird directly warned by the AFL's integrity officer against use of peptides in August 2011.
James Hird continued to receive substances from Stephen Dank and Dean Robinson despite suffering significant side effects from self administered injections of Melanotan II.
After initially raising concerns about the program, Doctor Bruce Reid gave eventually gave Stephen Dank approval to inject players with AOD-9604

The AFL will try to tread a fine line here - be seen chastising Essendon for their lack of discretion while avoiding a full blown investigation into the rest of the clubs. I still think that this will die out with a whimper rather than creating a full blown clean out.

not so sure about that now that Hird has taken them to the Supreme Court

JAMES Hird will launch Supreme Court action against the AFL over its handling of footy's drugs investigation. The Essendon coach's lawyers will act on Thursday morning in a dramatic escalation of the game's greatest crisis. "We will be instituting proceedings," Hird's lawyer, Stephen Amendola, told the Herald Sun.

And when he is being pursued like this:

There are some very stupid people running the Essendon football club if they think they can stare down the AFL and the other clubs on this one. There soon may be room for a team from Tassie after all.

The revelations outlined by sittingbison above are a bit too damning for a "whimper" scenario. That might be the case before Hird decided to push back even though he obviously had seen all that information a week ago yet he still persists in playing hard done by.

The AFL knowing what they had tried to play nice, I think the gloves are off now. Based upon all this information the expectations regarding penalties are going to be high.

Good point. Being more of a follower of the Rugby codes I hadn't heard that until now. Still, is it possible the bombers will be taken to the cleaners to avoid investigation on other clubs eg: Collingwood? Don't forget that there has been whisperings of HGH and Peptide use there.

I struggle to believe that Essendon are the only club with a "Supplements Program" (why can't the media call it what it is ) and it really does look like the AFL is trying to avoid a league wide investigation.

Possibly one of the "unspecified amino acids" (apparently a term used by Dank to disguise that fact that the 'amino acids' were in fact joined together by peptide bonds and therefore were actually peptides) was expected by Dank to stimulate IGF-1 production.

Or alternatively he was looking for effectiveness of AOD-9604.

Elevated serum IGF-1 is a biomarker for growth hormone abuse in sport. One of the purported effects of AOD-9604 a synthetic peptide of a fragment of growth hormone is upregulation of IGF-1.

IGF-1 mediates the anabolic effects of growth hormone so it makes a mockery of protestations that AOD-9604 is not potentially performance enhancing if you are administering it with the purpose of stimulating IGF-1 production.

So after months and months of complaining about the facts not being made public, Hird decides to sue after some are made public by claiming he has been denied natural justice. I think he's taken his inspiration of fighting this from Lance. I hope he gets a lifetime ban from coaching in all sports.

Fool. Hird had every chance of getting away with a tap on the wrist and most of the dirt being swept under the carpet. I hope that every little detail gets aired and Essendon's favourite son gets crucified.

Did anyone watch the Footy Show last night? Sam Newman is in total utter denial. The man is making himself look like an even bigger idiot than he already is and the fans are lapping it up. Even the co-hosts looked stunned - I thought James Brayshaw's jaw was going to hit the ground at one stage!
