Manny Pacquiao, who has made anti-gay remarks before, finally went too far even for Nike. They dropped their sponsorship after he said gays were "worse than animals". Besides being bigoted, Manny is ignorant, as homosexuality has in fact been observed in nature.

For the first and maybe last time, Mayweather looks superior to Pacquiao outside the ring, as he issued a statement that he was fully supportive of the LGBT community.

What's so ironic about this is that the Philippines is one of the most gay-tolerant countries in the world. I know many gays over here, everyone does, and I've never heard of any making any attempt to hide their orientation, nor do they need to. They may be the objects of jokes and teasing, but it's all done in a spirit of kindness. Manny's homophobia clearly stems from his Biblical literalism, which is a minority view in this mostly Catholic country, though it's support has been increasing.

What's sad and ignorant about what he quoted, is that it cherry picks words from the Old Testament (Leviticus 20:13), in an English translation, without making any effort to understand who the Levi were, or what the focus of the book of Leviticus was about. This has been done many times by many ignorant Christians. The book is primarily aimed the Levi, or Levites, and their vicars, as a set of rules during a time of few moral laws, or rules, when even pedophilia was tolerated in some areas. If someone really wants to understand the Levi, they really need to read the entire book, and study some history.

It should also be very clear that this was not the teachings of Jesus, nor part of the New Testament. So many people collapse all of Christian lineage history together, as if Jesus was unaware of the Torah, or history and teachings before him! Anyone who reads any of the New Testament can clearly see this.

Alp, that's how religion works: pick and choose what works for you. ie: banging prostitutes while your wife is asleep is OK, but gay people are animals. Banging interns, and getting hammered nightly is OK, but gay rites are wrong. Abortion is wrong, but killing abortion doctors is OK. etc...etc...

EDIT: Since this is a political buzz in Idaho politics: Several religious groups who protest against abortion, but only use faith healing (no docs/meds). So its not OK to terminate a first trimester fetus, but it is OK to let a six year old die of a treatable pathogen?!

Headgear mostly just stops cuts and bruises, it doesn't do too much to stop brain trauma, it gives a false sense of security. It can hinder you vison (a little bit) and your head becomes a bigger target.

I have also read that head gear spreads the impact zone maybe because it absorbs part of the blow.

I am pretty sure it was Angelo Dundee who said the same thing, but it may have actually been Ferdie Pachecho, or Angelo echoing Ferdie. He wanted amateur boxers to wear no head gear, and to use 8oz gloves, and even smaller gloves for the lighter weight classes. (Current rules are 12oz above 165lbs, and 10oz under). I think he wanted lighter weight gloves for the pros as well. His theory was that it would localize the impact better, and cause less brain trauma. Put another way, you might see more broken jaws, loose teeth, swollen eyes, and yes, more cuts, but less brain injuries which are more serious.

I'll have to look this up, but I'm pretty sure I have it right.

Speaking of the Olympics, Pacquiao says that if the decision is made to allow pro boxers to compete (it will be voted on in May, I believe), he would consider representing the Philippines (which has never produced a Gold Medal winner in its entire history). Pacquiao is scheduled to fight against Tim Bradley next month, and that was supposed to be the end of his career. If pros are allowed, it would be very interesting to see who else would enter, and whether Pacquiao, clearly on the decline, might have some real competition.

McGregor still has 6 fights left in his UFC contract so I don't know how this would come about. You mention money, I actually don't know any sportsperson that talks about making money more than Mayweather and McGregor. Even with what they have earned, I wouldn't put this past them.

Would they just box each other? McGregor would get the snot beat out of him. If they were to go into the octogon Mayweather would get the beatdown that he deserves so badly. I don't see how they could create a competitive fight in either discipline.

Maybe they'll just get into a shouting contest, about money.... :rolleyes:

I will believe it if I see it. Could well be a plublicity stunt. Anyhow, Mayweather's boxing skills would be far superior to McGregor's. With all due respect to McGregor it would be a complete mismatch.
