In all fairness, Van garderen had a very nice career. He won WT stage races, some nice WT stages, as well as a white jersey and top five finish at the tour. I would guess most pro riders would sign on for those palmares.
He had a very good career, indeed.

I think he falls under the category that always had the potential for even more given his talent though.
