Really impressed with Adam Yates so far, it's early days as far as helping Pogi win the Tour but I'm sure Pogi is happy to have him at his side this year. It's often said that it's hard to find a Kuss-level climbing dom without his own leadership ambitions getting in the way, but UAE seem to have landed a really good option. For all the obvious red herrings about "dual leaders" from team mgt he's made it clear from the beginning he's here to help Pog and is riding that way. Sure, it helps that he's joined a team led by one of the greatest riders in history, so there's none of the Movistar trident shenanigans, or Ineos hydra "road will decide" suggestions, but it still requires him to park his ego and so far he's done that while also getting an opportunity to win a stage.

Saw this response in an article referencing journos questioning him on his own ambitions in the race:

Yates has long been an accomplished bike rider. Seven years ago, when he was a 23-year-old trying to show what he had, he came to the Tour de France and rode like a future star. Fourth overall, just 21 seconds off the podium and winner of the best young rider classification. Now 30, he is here wearing yellow, riding as well as he has ever done. How hard is it to be so good and not to have the chance to go for the title? Here we spoke a language he did not understand. He reminded us that when he agreed at the end of last year to join UAE Team Emirates, it was on the basis that he would ride for Pogacar. He understood this and now his hope was that his team-mate would be in yellow in Paris.
This was all delivered with a total absence of ego. Yates was not looking for compliments, or even sympathy. The change from Ineos to UAE has given him new energy but this is what happens to the equipier who has a leader in whom he believes. They go harder knowing the boss is the best.
Still, we tried to say that given his talent, Yates should still have a chance of finishing third. Again, his vision did not tally with ours. He thought that would be nice but unrealistic. If you are committed to riding for someone else, it is best to divest yourself of personal ambition.

Dunno if this has been brought up earlier.
Recently went through the BYR competition in the TdF, and found it quite funny that not only did they win it in two consecutive years; Adam in 2016, Simon in 2017, they both beat Meintjes and Buchmann.

Will add that Jayco picked a poor team for the TDF - For example you only need one of Juul-Jensen, Durbridge and Craddock - You could have included a Scotson/Sobrero for support for Yates and had a Stewart as the second last rider for Groenewegen.

do you go to a bigger team and be a domestique for someone else

Guess the brothers in crank arms have performed that experiment and the results are in

working out well for Adam and Id say he has more euros in the bank too

It seems that Adam yates feels really good with Uae. It looks like he was able to take another step at 30. it seems to be one of his best seasons of his career! a stage in the Uae Tour and 3rd in the Gc. Catalonia fallen and Tirreno Almeida leader. Romandie stage win and Gc won! Dauphine 2nd Gc. Tour de France, Stage won, 4 days yellow and top 5 Gc seems certain. I see him finishing 3rd after the Time Trial and Col de La Loze. fantastic season!

Very good season for Adam, although I wouldn't count on a good gc result just yet. The Yateses can somethings crack in epic fashion. Wouldn't take anything away from all his other results though.

Team leaders like to stay at Jayco Alula because they receive unconditional support from the team, although I'd argue that sometimes they provide too much support - Simon is very much into stability and reassurance which he gets at Jayco, however I expect Simon will leave at the end of 2024 - Adam was happy to go back to Jayco for 2023 and his manager was even went to to the Jayco post TDF party , however the team could not meet his salary demands - You could call it a sliding doors moment.

It was interesting to hear Nico Roche on commentary mention meeting Adam Yates a month or two ago and asking how things were going, and how Yates responded about 'never going home' this year, just from altitude to race and back to altitude and that 'the Tour is everything'. One got the sense that he was working harder than ever to prepare for his support role this tour, which is not surprising given that UAE clearly want the TDF win again this year and are doing whatever it takes to achieve that, but still illuminating given he would hardly have been slacking off in his previous teams/roles.

Looks to be working out for both him and UAE at this point.

I actually thought today when we saw them from behind, it was quite easy to see that their body shapes and styles are not identical. Adam is broader around the shoulders and also rides more upright than Simon does.

Anyway, Simon's experiment of not racing for three months worked as he was strong in the last week - Two poor days on the third weekend cost him a podium. Never seen Adam ride as consistently in a 3 week stage race - Actually is my early pick for San Sebastian.
