He dropped off the back on the climb, though more than likely due to surprise at Garmin, and did a good job on a technical descent before claiming the select sprint for 2nd place.

That said there's a good chance if there are fireworks on tomorrows final climb he is dropped like he has been on every climb this year.

Why is there 'a good chance' ? Just because he got dropped on climbs earlier in the year? On the final climb at Trentino he was quoted after the stage saying he felt he could have gone with the lead group but chose to ride within his own set limit. Another month has passed since then so I think it is no surprise he would be on a higher level now. Cadel's a fighter. We will see.

Yeh Yeh we will see, Basso won the Giro in 2010 whats youre point? 36 is old for GC riders isit not? I cant remember last time someone of 36 got a GC podium or even top 5.

I think things like these might change. It´s a slow change, however. More and more riders will ride into their 40ies, sprinters will stay explosive longer, GC riders will keep their regeneration abilities longer.

The reasons are obvious, and numerous: in general, population reaches higher average age; training, nutrition (and legal and illegal pharma) get continuously improved; safety is imroved on the courses.

Horner, Voigt, Rebellin, Hondo, they all show that this phenomenom has already taken place.

many of us won't.

by the way, can't wait to see him in cali :p

He's not on the start list on PCS

Looks like a pretty crappy field though, perhaps one for the Beast?

Cadel is here to hunt for stages and build his form. I don't expect him to do much in GC. If he does anything in the GC the best I can see him getting is the latter half of a top 10.

Is Cadel back? Didn't see today's stage but last time he competed for high placings on stages like this was 2011 :D
.

Didn't you watch the stages to PdBF or Porrentruy in last year's tour?
He flattered to deceive there as well before bombing badly later.
Today he was dropped , at least briefly, on the climb but got back on when Hesjedal dialled things back. I think all today tells us is that he will always excel in a bunch sprint composed of GC contenders.

I like your optimism but I think realism says you should not draw any conclusions from this stage.

Not really, he was 2nd on the first MTF in TDF last year. He also won a very impressive stage win in Dauphine from a downhill finish.

Pretty much. It's all about the 2nd-3rd week. He could look the strongest on the Abruzzo stage but that still doesn't tell us whether or not he will fade out after the rest day. My hunch is it will happen, and 7th-8th on GC. He's lucky the ITT is soon.

loving this thread. cadel is a champion - people keep talking him down on the basis of what was previously bad luck - injuries/falls and illnesses, or just being plain cheated.

none of us can say how strong he'll be, but i have no idea why so many people are keen to write him off. fit and healthy, the guy is one of the strongest riders in the peloton. 1 or 2 years of age haven't made him weak.

didn't know that chiara cheated on him... i always thought she's a good girl:confused:

just like i said in trentino, a champ like cadel knows what it has to be done to arrive in top condition for il giro. he could be on the podium, never gives up.
let's see how he will do today.

yes, let's see. i'm less confident about his form for the Giro. but with his light racing (and training) load over the past 10 months, i think he will come to the Tour in good condition.

Giro d'Italia - Stage 3
Monday, 06 May 2013

Another eventful day here in Italy. 222km of winding narrow roads to keep things interesting...sometimes a bit too interesting...

Starting from the spectacular Sorrento along the even more impressive Amalfi coast, the few glimpses I caught of the scenery were quite something. Being in this group of >200 riders, our attention was more to the wheels in front of us. Although I did hear a few Aussies cheering - thank you! In a moment of what I assumed would be slightly less tense racing after the feed zone I got caught up in a stupid little accident. Over the bars and on top of Paolo Tiralongo. Tangled in both his and my bike, I thought my Giro might have been over for a moment. All because of some stray water bottle on the road. X-rays done and they tell me I'm bruised but ok.

In the final, it was an unfriendly descent into the final kilometres, Luca Paolini took advantage of the GC contenders concerns for their respective rivals to take the stage.

Tomorrow is another long one, normally not as selective but at 240km+ it will it not be easy.

Have put the following link in the wrong thread, search gave me the clinic thread? Anyhow -

I noticed that Cadel Evans came second on stage 3 of the Giro. Good on him — it’s always good to see him doing well. As I wrote this I thought Cadel’s best days were behind him, but now I see he’s absolutely flying. He’s seemed quite bitter in the bunch lately and has been going around grumbling in Italian and moaning about other teams. He’s always had a chip on his shoulder, but this time it’s much more than a chip, it’s a whole bag of Doritos!

Seems like another good day for Cadel today? Not sure how he looked (I didn't see it) but the stage 7 results and forum comments I've read so far suggest he's doing better than some here were giving him credit for a few days ago (no form, no threat, too old, past it etc). He certainly seems to be going better than Wiggins if nothing else.

Tomorrow will obviously confirm if he's the real deal or not but on stage results and GC it's looking quite promising for him so far. If he stays healthy who knows? Also in Santaromita looks like he might have a strong team mate come the mountains.

So who can predict cadels form for tomorrow?
He's been very up-and-down for the last few years, with a couple of highlights and many disappointments.
The team and cadel himself are talking him down, his 2013 form has been abysmal and yet his form seems to be picking up. I reckon cadel would be secretly desperate to do well, but feel like it's unlikely he'll manage to stay w the top dogs.

Anyone disagree?

I've said earlier I think he will be competitive in the Giro. No reason to change the view.

This will be the crucial stage for Cadel. He either drops big time and fades from contention for the overall or shows some resistance and still hangs around the top 5. I think this stage and the first MTF will tell us all, otherwise it's about setting himself up for the Tour. Wiggins rivals will be secretly hoping that he does not have a great day. It will certainly make the race more interesting if that happens.

still hanging there, remember last year Tour he was ahead of Nibali in the first ITT, then dropped the bomb in the mountains and second long ITT
