Cadel Evans - Whining little girl or Hyper GT Contender - Discuss

I must confess I was a bit disappointed when I read ACF's long awaited response this morning. He came across as slightly more of a nutjob than I had hoped for. ;)

Anyway it looks like this thread has sorted itself out, so that's good.

I stick by my original feeling that this year we are seeing the beginning of the Autumn of Cadel.

By that I mean that he seems to have matured a lot and he seems to be getting more out of all that he's been putting in.

However, I do think his days as a TdF contender are over, even if he could still probably make the podium when he's really on fire and other GTs could still be within his grasp. If that turns out to be true, then it would be good to see him turn his attention to a broader calendar and still bring a big beast presence to the TdF.

If he wants to be on the podium on the tour he needs to lose serious weight. But that would interfer with the rest of his objectives. A decent rider who came outa the back of knowwhere ( no offence aussies) in cycling terms. I question his mental strenght when things become complicated though.

Yeah at 64kgs he's positively obese.

I'm not sure why some people are suggesting that he shouldn't even consider himself as a GC rider in the GT's anymore. What's wrong with top 5 finishers or even top 10? It is probably only AC or AS who is going to win the TDF in the next couple of years. Does that mean that other riders should not race the TDF or focus on the KOM?

Evans has finished in the top 10 in how many GT's now? I think it's 6, with five of those top 5's. Only AC would have a better record in recent times, with blokes like Menchov and Sastre having a similar pedigree.

I think that Cadel has definitely got the most out of his ability. He doesn't climb with the ease of many of his rivals. I think that the reason why he doesn't attack a lot is because he is already in the red zone. To be dropped by Basso in the mountains at the Giro was hardly embarrassing considering how good a climber Ivan is. Maybe the Itallian can return to the TDF podium next year, but he'll need to skip the Giro.

I think that next year Cadel should still ride the TDF. He won't want to finish his tdf career with his last two results. After that he could ride the Vuelta if he's still fresh enough.

I agree with the comments about the team he joined (BMC). Why? Surely there were better options to join a team that would have a top 20 GC rider to help him in the mountains?

Still needs to learn how to be a team member imo. Never slam your team in public.

But, he's a gritty rider willing to suffer like a pig and I have more respect for him now than I ever have. I think he'll continue to make a fine one day rider.

64KG's and his fat %???? 64KG's is 64KG's untill it's broken down into it's muscle and fat %. How daft of you.

My apologies Boardhanger, I didn't realise you approached things so scientifically. I'm not aware of what Cadel's body fat percentages are and I would've thought only Cadel's closest advisors would have access to that information. But as you seem to be in his inner circle, please enlighten us.

Well he can weigh 64kg with 4% fat and 25%muscle mass. Why not cut 2-3% muscle mass without affecting fat percentage. It's a common technique use by many cyclists. Don't get me wrong I like Evans. Just throwing my 2 cense worth in. So many cycling fans have limited abilty when it comes to pshycial ideals  Have you been enlighten yet?.
p.s AussieFan94 I doubt Evans is at 4-6%.

I am a big fan of Evens specialy now that Lance is spending more time with his friends in America. Cadel has shown us that he is realy good at trying hard and making toliet faces on the poduim. no other cyclist has the corage and tanacity to do this in the same way that Evens does.

I like how selfless he is always letting the other riders finish in front of him, it takes a very big man to do this (Auscycol cofirms to me that evans is infact a very big man) And always giving away any jersey he gets to another rider.

Cadel

Anyone who says Cadel is a whinny baby needs to be tossed onto an active freeway. Cadel is the s h i t. He is the manliest of men. Truth be told, road racing is an art and Cadel is the Picasso of this game, while the rest of us are just f@@@ing around on an etch a sketch.

Physically cadel has all the tools. However, mentally he is a complete mess and while this can be overcome in shorter races, it is doubtful he will ever be able to put it together for a grand tour. You can always count on him for some kind of ridiculous drama during any of these big races.

The thing about it is that riding as a GC leader takes a lot more than legs. He still can't even seem to act like a proper team leader and interact appropriately with his team, much less the rest of the circus. I thought it was a complete joke that he didn't tell his teammates that his elbow was injured during the TdF. They could have helped him more, but it shows he doesn't trust them. If you don't trust your teammates during a grand tour you might as well not even show up.

It was a team management decision to tell limited people not Cadel's, I think you will find out the details if you read back thru the BMC press releases. Cadel has a very good relationship with this team, as he did with some members of his past team/s. Don't believe everything you read in the press or this forum:)D).

Evan's is a long way from being my favorite pro cyclist but he's certainly grown on me in the last 12 months. It's great to watch a pro who rides hard all year and not just for 3 weeks. He's been a great steward of the rainbow jersey too this year. Chapeau.

Oh, and VeloEcosse? way to spit the dummy! Man, he's got issues...

Um, because he already has trouble chasing Basso up the Mortirolo, he doesn't want to lose any more power.

Power to weight/ratio is the key for a rider like Evans. He hasn't the horsepower to use sheer power as a means to win G.T's.

I like Cadel but the GT win just isn't going to happen. He's not a particularly good TT rider, he has no explosiveness on the climbs and he'll be 34 next season. It just isn't going to happen and people need to give it a rest.

Cadel is a great rider for me... Is true that for a lot of ppl he is a whinning girl or something but they are wrong and they are not seeing the Cadel that we have seen this year... He has grown a lot and now he knows how to interact with his team and gain their loyalties, but as we know he has always been in weak teams, The last TdF he has a pretty good roller team but in the mountains he just had Morabito and Morabito just showed good form in 1 stage tho...

If Cadel wants to be a GT winner he has to focus Giro - Vuelta, Le Tour is a nice dream but his time is passing and his years inside the ProCycling as an star are ending slow but constantly... maybe We don't know and Cadel will make a "Horner" in the next years but first we have to see it... Cadel is on time to be a "Cunego", realize that he is WAY BETTER a one day rider than a GC Contender...

BTW Totally love how Cadel climbs! He looks like he is always in "red" :D

yep because Cadel is an amateur racer and doesn't have a trainer or anything to help him out. he doesn't know what suits him best so he needs to take advise from an anonymous internet forum
