Why? What difference did it make if it was in August or not? They already knew who Betancur was.
Because August is still pretty early in the transfer season, so I don't think a guy like Betancur, who still has some pretty big and relatively recent results, would just take such a big cut instead of trying to negotiate with other teams for a month or two.

It could be a decent team for him, a few other Colombian riders and technical staff and support for him in Colombia. He's also no longer the one guy on a French team that doesn't spek French, I think he still could be good, let's not forget that a overweight Betancur was able to win Paris-Nice and to beat Degenkolb in a sprint in the Tour Cycliste International du Haut Var-matin, even when he's a few kg to heavy he has the potential to be one hell of a rider.

Didn't hinder him for the first 5 months in 2013 so the environment should not be used as an excuse.

And there is the other forum to discuss the fairy tale story of those few weeks in spring of 2014.

But it's great that Abarca decided to have a Cobo 3.0 on their team. Couldn't have happened to a nicer group of people.

First time riding for a big team so he was surely motivated. He also had a good season at Aqua & Sapone in 2012, if that team was able to find a way to deal with him after the bad 2nd half of 2012, then a decent WT team should be able to to the same. For the record, I think that he's a lazy idiot, but if you handle him the right way he can get some results.

Any early guesses as to what his schedule will be?

Assuming he's in shape (big assumption, I know), I'd be surprised if he's not one the featured Movistar riders for the Ardennes. Also, he will probably be their top GC rider at the Giro, unless Valverde finally decides to give that a go.

+1.

Very simple. Send him to races where he has shown some kind of success.

Valverde already ruled out doing the Giro next year. Would be great to have a strong Betancur disrupt the Nibali v Landa show.

Who's going to be Colombia's man for Rio?

Urán would be the logical bet.

At Lampre I would've believed in a little comeback. Something like the blue jersey at next years Giro. He would've had a special position within the team.

At Movistar I ain't got much faith. It ain't worked out with Cobo twice, it ain't worked out with Rujano. Nah, it ain't gonna work out this time as well I fear.

Hopefully I'm wrong. A motivated Betancur with decent shape should be able to light up thing in the Italian mountains.

In theory, Betancur has a two year ban with national teams after he was a no-show in Toronto

Probably several empañada stands back home

thank you for not making a taco or burrito joke :D

I'd be at the arepa de chocolo stand
In Spain they've got San Miguel instead of Kronenbourg and Tapas for free.

If I was him I would show up.

Quintana hinted (see also the Valverde thread) that Betancur will help Valverde in the Ardennes and afterwards he wants to gain a spot in the Tour-team
CB has a lot of work to do in order to gain a spot on the Tour team for Movistar.

I'm looking forward to seeing him make it.
In all seriousness, I'd send him to the TDU. It's a race that suits him and if Betancur wants leadership at Paris Nice and a free role in the Ardennes this would be a good place to start.

If he does turn up overweight, then racing in 35-40 degree heat should melt some lard off. Just keep him away from the Cooper's and 4 'n 20's :D

There's no free role in the Ardennes with Valverde in your team
