Carlos Betancur discussion thread

Page 94 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
So today was the first stage of Circuit Cycliste Sarthe. Wet conditions, but Betancur survived in the first peloton of 45 riders. So far so good, but of course this result doesn't say much in terms of condition. At least he did an effort to stay in the main group. Tomorrow two stages on the menu: a short sprint stage and an ITT (6.8 km).

I think we need to be kinder here .....we don;t know exactly what Betencur's issues are ...maye he just needs help and time...The team still believe in him....It could be a long back but he may need time to get there

He is trying and being a top athlete is not always easy especially if you have lost condition

Please plenty of PCT riders should have his contract

Maybe the kindest thing would be to have him go down the PCT level, less pressure.

Maybe but Movistar would rather try and get Betencur back to condition - even partly - than a PCT rider ...its a gamble but one they are willing to take

I dont know if he is taking the p*** but on the off chance he has real issues the maybe ....

Obviously this wil be his last season to try

If he has any real issues, pro cycling is not really the way to resolve them IMO. Generally speaking.

I agree, there are a busload of cautionary tales out there where potential mental illness and pro-cycling just don't mix. He seems to just about be on the ragged edge these days.

This morning was a short sprint stage, Betancur finished in the peloton. Only 11 riders lost time so this was no indication at all. More important is the individual time trial this afternoon. As far as I can see, he did a rather 'good' time trial. Waiting for everyone to finish, but I think it's a promising result since he is no specialist at all.

25th in the TT, which is exceptional, considering the past years

Only 96 riders and not a strong field though. But it's not bad, not at all.

Tomorrow a more hilly stage, but maybe he'll have working duties .

It's a start, at least. Sure it was only 6.8 kms and the only real TTers were Dowsett and Castroviejo but hopefully a step in the right direction.

Hopefully Unzue doesn't keep throwing Betancur at unsuitable classics and puts him 2.1 and 2.HC races until he resembles a WT racer.
