Cavendish was to blame, he seriously attempted to block out Ciolek by swinging across. Bad crash.
Broken wheel? Having watched in super slow motion I don't buy it.

Ok, I think I know what happened. The front of Haussler's front wheel touched the back of Cav's front wheel which literally forced (by the effect of gyroscopic precession) Cav's front wheel to swerve even further into Haussler's line. When he tried to correct I think the stress on Cav's wheel became too great and it broke. I looked at the video many times now, frame by frame, and I think it's most obvious around 2:13. You can actually see Haussler has a particularly violent swerve just before Cav goes down. I think that's when it happened and the wheels touched.

Yeah, I agree with that. I think Hausslers movement caused the crash, but it still doesn't take it away that it was Cavendish's fault. The cyclingtv youtube clip makes it clearer for me:

Oh, I fully agree. It's Cavendish's fault to go around Ciolek and then lean into Haussler that way. I was just interested in the mechanics of the wheel breaking at this precise moment. It wasn't simple fatigue. It was the other wheel touching trying it to force it one way and Cav instinctively trying to correct the other way. The result was too much stress and bam!

Jamsque, it means if you race ANYTHING you will experience a crash and have to replace something either equipment or a body part of some sort it's part of the sport. so #@% happens..so what?

He had his head down, he was sprinting for the line, he didn't see Haussler, it was an accident.

But don't let the facts get in the way of the hate party.

I like Cav - and actually think he does not get enough credit for his all round performance - but this incident was his fault.
Head down or not you can still work out where everyone is using your peripheral vision. He went to 'bump' Haussler and missed.

Cav's arm is in front of Haussler's and Cav's momentum meant his hip would have struck Hausslers shoulder - with that much of a move off the line requires an abrupt correction.

They might have stayed upright if the wheel didn't collapse - but wheels are designed to be moving in one direction.

Cavendish swerved wildly three times during the sprint. The third time he took someone down..

If you watch this video just after the bend coming into the straight you clearly see Hausler swinging violently to the right nearly forcing Cav into the barriers before swinging back over to the left to overtake Cioleck. Just who caused the swerves in the first place?

BTW, Necessary Evil is BPC. Ignore and report.

Does anyone have a link to an up to date list? i need to update my ignore list.

On topic. 25 point fine, 30 second GC penalty both fair enough. 200 franc fine ... what!! Why even bother? Should be 2000-5000.

Cav is getting dangerous, once you can forgive but he's clocking a few of these type of moves up now. Idiot.

Fun fact, the wheel actually springs back into shape after Cav faceplants. It's utterly amazing.

they need to enforce riders holding their lines in road races, with his track background cav should know better

it is not just him, look at the last 100m of any stage that ends in a sprint

I don't think any sprinter ever kicks in a perfectly straight line. They are always moving across the road. Granted, Cav today probably moved more than most do, but it was nothing totally out of the ordinary, it was just unfortunate that Haussler was moving across the road in the opposite direction and they didn't see each other.

But I'm wasting my breath, this thread was started so people who already hated Cavendish could hurl insults at him, not for any actual discussion of today's crash.

+1 There are to many closed minds here to look at other possibilities.

"Boy Crasher"

Smooth Move, Cav... Just in time for your follow-up book "BOY CRASHER." This is one of the many more implosions we will witness.
Furthermore, since Haussler was involved, I wonder if it was an attempt to repeat his 2009 MSR win too...

BS.

I have watched the video 4 times, seen about 30 photos of the finish sequence and came to the same conclusion the race judges did. it was a dangerous move.

I wish guys like you would actually get out of your hateboy world occasionally.

Maybe you have never noticed but sprinting is actually a risky business and sometimes crashes happen. If you actually tried to be a teeny bit objective you would see that both guys moved across not just one of them. It's a fact of sprinting life that sometimes sh!t happens, your pick yourself up and move on.

I guess news on the LA front was a bit quiet hence the switch to slagging off Cav.

It's a sprint - stuff like this happens - Cavendish got a penalty. All seems fine to me. There are worse accidents out on the road in the bunch when someone loses concentration... at least his was in a sprint!

All seems fine?!?!

Haussler had to abandon the Tour de Suisse because of the crash.

Sure they go fast.

Sure they bump a bit.

Sure these are the best at the game.

But don't drive out of control and hurt someone or end their season or career!!!

There is no need to be abusive. These things some times happen in racing. The main thing is to hope that he and others are not badly hurt.

He was pulling in front so I don't know why some are saying he did it deliberately.
Of course he wasnt deliberately trying to cause a crash. But he was deliberately trying to pinch out anyone coming around Ciolek. The wreck was his fault alone. With Haussler out and Coyot in the hospital, I wonder if the young prick is pleased with himself.
