Chains/Quicklinks

I have 2 eight speed bikes both with relatively new chains. One is a Sram the other is a Shimano. The Sram equipped bike also has a Wipperman quicklink installed on the chain.

Today I did some work on both bikes. The Shimano bike doesn’t have a quick link so I went to my junk box and dug out 3 old sets of Sram Quicklinks. I couldn’t get any to engage.

So I tried the Wipperman quicklink which was on the other 8 speed bike. That didn’t work either.

Then just for ****’s and giggles I took one of the old Sram quicklinks and popped it on the Sram chain that previously had the Wipperman quick link. It was no problem.

What gives? I can get either Sram or Wipperman quicklinks on my Sram chain but neither on my Shimano.

Wipperman and Sram 8s links are too narrow for shimano 8s chains, as you have found out. shimano 8s chains are a wee bit thicker, not sure why. Just get a shimano 8s pin, reinstall.

Thanks for that. I thought non-track chains where all the same width. I guess not, must be a way for Shimano to sell more pins.

I had a pin and reinstalled, but the chain is too short now. I will fix that today.
