I've read the articles on this site and I've been to the Change Cycling Now website, and so far, I'm a little disappointed. The scope of the sport and organization is not really "change cycling" but "change cycling leadership. While I agree that changing leadership would help a great deal, this group seriously needs to avoid becoming a shadow government or a loyal opposition party because what they do not need is for this to be political. Yet, that is exactly the direction that they seem to be heading towards.
The inclusion of cheaters (or ex-cheaters, if you will, however, in my mind, when do you begin believing that liars are telling the truth?) doesn't help matters, however, to put a positive stamp on it, Vaughters and Jaksche should talk about doping not only in terms of maintaining a level playing field in sport but also in terms of the riders' health. And they can do it from personal experience, as can riders like Hamilton. Make the case that this is about changing the culture of a sport which pushes athletes to do serious damage to their health by blood doping or taking substances. Don't give us the same-old, same-old about how its "just wrong and we need to get rid of it."
As for the McQuaid thing, I think its good enough to present a positive, forward thinking plan and then let people draw their own conclusions about the lack of ideas coming from the guys in charge or of positive leadership in the sport. Be an advocacy group, not an opposition party. Don't make this political or about any sort of power struggle. People will be turned off if this is simply reduced to squabbling.
I still am looking forward to the ideas this group may come up with and I hope I am not disappointed. So far I have heard something or other about how testing would be done differently, which was overshadowed by the group wanting to crown King Greg. This should be more about the message than about any one individual. Otherwise, how can it be certain that leadership won't lapse again once Greg eventually leaves the scene?
I stress that this should be "Change Cycling Now," NOT "Change the UCI President Now."
