Well, well, well.

Cookson Jr has a 4 year contract with Sky

In Italian: http://www.gazzetta.it/Ciclismo/29-04-2014/cookson-figlio-presidente-uci-oliver-brian-sergio-henao-team-sky-80544217918.shtml

Apparently young Oliver is joining as a "Performance Coordinator" and will be liaising with the Spanish speaking riders thanks to his fluent Spanish.

I'm not even sure if Verbruggen was this bold...

Renewing perhaps? He's been there almost from the beginning, I believe?

Hein is a smart guy and would likely tell you there is no problem with any of this.

He is so smart, he licenses the usage rights to the phrase "Tour of "

Excellent to hear that both Brian Cookson and Martin Gibbs
attended the recent meetings of the Mass Participation
Commission with Andy Cook and the rest of the committee
tasked with helping grow the non-elite and amateur side of
cycling. Refreshing that the President and Director General
are taking an active interest and role in the development
of our sport at the grass roots level.

Remember that the UCI has a worldwide monopoly on competitive cycling at this point and they have gone to great lengths to protect and extend it. So, it could be as much about capturing revenue and controlling the sport as more noble goals of just getting people out on bikes.

This is a wait and see.

Cookson does have an impressive record with BC of getting folks out on the bike.

I REALLY don't think there is anything insidious here.

might be my fault, but i don't see what's remarkable here.
it was a uci meeting of a uci commission.
the meeting was next to cookson's office.
there were heads of other cycling federations there.
would be strange if cookson wouldn't show up.

Cycling in Ireland is more popular than ever. It sure has jacksh!t to do with the former UCI president.

People wanting to be healthy, the price of fuel in a time of austerity and cycling becoming popular with Hipsters made it fashionable, not sure Cookson can take credit.

Sorry there are plenty of other non UCI groups running races which have nothing to do with the UCI. Here in the Uk there are at least 5 different organisations running races in all forms as well as many sportives..Yes BC want them because of the revenue not for anything else. The ICF runs races throughout the world with its own championships in Belgium every year and there are usually a few famous ex pros riding!!

I wish we had a something like that in the Metro Atlanta Area.
Something traffic free I could take the family and ride at (daughter on a trailer bike).

Its odd to think of the the UK as bike friendly (compared to say the Netherlands), but compared to the South Eastern US, it is a cyclists dream.

There are other sanctioning bodies. What the UCI/ASO fears is one of these events will turn into a televised product that competes with theirs. You can even see this inside the UCI. The UCI already demotes popular races they haven't chosen as "important" events.

The main emphasis for the UCI remains growing viewers. It is the way their performance is measured at the IOC. They can't have some non-UCI event stealing viewers.

So I was just reading a Lizzie Armistead interview in the Guardian, which linked to an interview with Cookson pre-presidency, where he promised to split out the anti-doping function from the UCI. Sorry I haven't really followed this, but does anyone know:
a) has any attempt been made to carry though with this promise?
b) has it been discussed at length in this thread?
c) what's the conclusion?

I'm quite happy to read this thread back (don't have time now), but the last few pages seem to be discussing the public riding, and whether Lance will testify to the investigation, and whether the report will be independent when it comes out in 2015, so I thought I'd check if the other stuff had been covered before I commit a lunch-hour to back reading!

Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Here is a summary of the initial changes.

As a result of an Audit completed in March further refinements are coming.

In summary, complete change of leadership at CADF (the UCI anti-doping wing).
Separation of the legal portion of the anti-doping service from the general legal portion of the UCI.

Appointment of more independent people into key roles.

The conclusion depends upon your initial point of view. Some may view it as more of the same, but certainly to me he has moved the anti-doping to greater (but not complete) independence and to a sounder basis.

I'm not sure how we could ever know.

Anyway, me like this bit:

" This does not mean that the UCI is disregarding its responsibilities in the fight against doping. To the contrary, the UCI is now in a much better position to assume these responsibilities by avoiding the possibility of interference of its directors in the work of the anti-doping experts (both scientific and legal)."

I think that might be a less-than-subtle tip of the hat to those who dared accuse Phat and He in of corruption

Thank you for the answer - at first glance it looks like a much better system (especially the bit about publishing the rules of procedure for each party, which should allow closer scrutiny?), but I might read back in the thread to see the more of the same argument too!
