It was a precautionary move. I doubt his wrist is that injured. My guess is that his hip is probably going to be the biggest problem. He's incredibly thin so I imagine he came right down on the ball of his femur (same side he crashed on at the Dauphine). I think he will feel the affects of that crash for a few days.

his wrist is fine, there is no way you ride out of the saddle with a broken wrist. bruised and sore yes but his losses (if he has any) won't be so dramatic tomorrow that he can't regain them if he is strong enough to distance the rest come the mountains and TT. He'll just have to make sure to back up his performances and not fade in the third week - which should be a given for a grand tour winner anyway...

If he drops the ball tomorrow its surely mental weakness and i don't think he's mentally weak.

There was comment recently on twitter that there are no major fractures visible but there could still be problems. I've ridden a few stretches of cobbles and by wrists and forearms were agony afterwards and the were in good nick, someone that skinny with a dodgy wrist....not good omens for him

Froome continues to be the bookmaker's favourite, but today's crash cost him about 5% win probability and the announcement that he needs xrays another 10%. He now stands at about 40% to win the Tour de France. Contador not far behind (about 38%). In other words, today's crash was great for those of us who want as even a contest as possible.

If he doesn't lose time tomorrow, I expect him to get 50+% again.

What are Nibali's odds?

Hamilton rode with a broken collarbone to a stage victory in 2003..

Beeing mentally weak is not necessarily the problem, however a crash today could make him more nervous and thus more likely to make mistakes tommorrow..

I don't know if Eisel or Thomas can do anything to soften the blows to his sore wrist, hand, shoulders and left leg that will happen repeatedly over the last half of the stage. He's going to just have to gut it out.

That is true.

I have a feeling Nibali will do well here and Contador has been riding very far up the pack so far, definitely a good idea for tomorrow, if possible.

Key word is obvious... wrist too complex for a straightforward answer... if this goes bad for him tomorrow it could be really bad not just the tour!

I have a feeling Nibali will do well here and Contador has been riding very far up the pack so far, definitely a good idea for tomorrow, if possible.

I think Nibbles will do well tomorrow as well. I also like Talansky's attitude (though I think being too aggressive could come back to haunt him). It will be interesting to see how Sky approaches this tomorrow. It's going to be a real battle entering the first section of pave.

A team like Sky can ride this stage defensively and limit the loss to 90s.
Ride harder and the risk increases.

I don't think Froome's wrist will be all that bad tomorrow. He rode the whole stage today with it, got out of the saddle, etc. It won't help to have to bump and bang around over cobbles with it, but still, I'd be more worried about his hip in general (long term)

What do you mean "not just the Tour"? Even if there's a fracture it won't be career threatening...anyway if he has to quit what a terrible fiasco it would be, Brailsford should have learned from 2011 when Wiggins broke his collarbone. I mean taking Xandio over Wiggins...criminal really.

nah Froom will drop everyone, solo to the finish line. He is the new Wiggins on the cobble.

Even one section of cobbles will put his wrist under immense stress, there are some pretty tough sections tomorrow and if there is a small fracture then that will be total agony for him.

I think Froome had enough to worry about with this stage anyway. My sense is that he's not that bad off but will have some issues. I would be surprised and impressed if he gets through this unscathed.

He was weeker in Dauphine after the crash and he is going to be weeker with this more serious crash at least till the first rest day.

That is good for the race becouse for me he is the strongest, and now maybe others are stronger. Tomorrow will be a bad day for him, when it was spected to be the stronger of the favourites with his team...
