Froome shouldn’t be riding. He surely can’t need the money. Isn’t he embarrassed posting pitiful finishes and being the boss of the caboose? The guy was unquestionably the best big tour rider for a number of years but now he’s just a passenger and parade rider. Don’t understand why he continues to ruin his legacy when he isn’t remotely competitive. Just retire already.

If one wants to rate how good Froome still is, just have a look at today‘s Catalunya winner Ciccone (who is in the shape of his life), and last year’s TdF stage to Alpe d‘Huez:

Froome and Ciccone both rode in the breakaway of the day. Finally, Froome finished in 3rd place, and Ciccone in 10th place (1 min 26 secs down on Froome).

Currently, eight/nine months later, Ciccone wins Catalunya stages, and Froome is on average level in Rwanda, but that is part of the game: just a different approach!…

For Froome, now all that counts is getting the miles in. Just steady, long rides. Rather calm approach. All that counts is July, and the race for #5. Whereas Ciccone has the Giro in mind, stage hunting and KOM jersey.

In Chris‘ position, he has to look for these „marginal gains“. Doing things in a creative, modern way. So his long range solo attack, ridden recently in Rwanda, could be a weapon against Vingegaard and Pogacar, if he repeats this attack in the Tour.

Both, Froome and super domestique Teuns, now keep a low profile. Project „#5“ demands this, apparently…

Every day he rides is a further monument to Sylvain Adams' hubris.

As long as he's being paid enough that he doesn't mind his proclamations of getting back to his best making him getting attention from within the fanbase mostly nowadays as a cycling lolcow, and his name value meaning people will continue to give him a platform to tell us how he's getting back to his best, and pay him to appear because of what he achieved before, I can't begrudge him continuing to race and cash those cheques. It's not Froome's fault Adams offered him that contract and given the money that was offered to him it shouldn't be held against him that he takes it. He's many things, but an idiot is not one of them.

It's not edifying for a champion that has won what he has to go out with a slow, painful demise and ever more straw-clutching about a once in a while half decent break day where he shows the merest, brief glimpse of a rider at something vaguely approximating the level he once had, but then Froome was never a 'normal' champion in how his story played out from the very beginning.

First of all, good post as always. That said, to the bolded I don't think anyone blames Froome for taking the money. Or very few. What people blame him for is taking the piss.

He, now as always, seems to strive to insult the intelligence of many if not most people listening to his drivel.

Of course, if he did like that. I blame him for dishonest, and he is many things, but not dishonest.

Anyway he said he Will be at Catalunya, so I think someone has to give explanation. He doesnt like classics or País Vasco, so...he is not going to ride till Romandie , of he riders. But no newd from him..illness, change of plans of the team...he is flying ...

"painful demise" and all the other things
if he doesnt find it painful then he's right to ride on and on
I am loving it. all the fans feeling bad, mocking, judging. who fking cares. he wants to ride on, he doesnt care what fans say.
just ride on Dawg
Why call me out on that when I'm literally saying what you are? That it doesn't matter if it's not edifying, it doesn't have to be? If it was solely about pride and he cared about not being seen as a shadow of his former self, then he needn't have tried to come back in the first place, his place in history is already assured.

Marginal gains became marginal finishes..........

So the driver became a passenger..........albeit a well paid one.

Where is the dawg?

Good question. What is happening with Chris Froome?
Nothing on his personal twitter account to explain/give reason for his non-participation at Catalunya.
Did he crash while training? Is he ill/sick? Was he concerned about being cruelly exposed on such a mountainous route?
I think there are some dreamers who think he is 'building up the form' to unleash a spectacular comeback later in the season.
The real reason for his inactivity is probably far more mundane.

Considering he didn't even stand out in Rwanda against nobodies it would have been interesting to see how he would do in a stacked field like Catalunya.

Maybe his latest horse crap waffling about the crash and how he had to learn how to walk again was the final nail in the coffin even for Israel?

Pantani spend most of 1996 in a swimming pool learning how to walk again and then he won on Alpe d'Huez in 1997!

Froome performs in a way close to defraud and has the nerve to talk about race victories and fib about the impact of his injuries.

Replying to a fan on twitter Chris Froome revealed today his next race will be the five-stage Tour of the Alps, starting on April 17.
He competed in the same race last year, but was eliminated on the final stage for finishing outside the time limit - nearly 26mins behind first-placed Thibaut Pinot.
This year's edition will be no less challenging for Froome, with a total of 14,000 metres of elevation gains.
He will have to tackle a 5.2km penultimate climb at 10.1% on Stage 1; two 8% and 8.5% climbs near the end of Stage 2 and a mighty 15.5km climb to the line at 7.5% at the end of Stage 3.
Stage 4 has an altitude gain of 3,610m and the final stage includes 10% pitches in the final 20k.
Is this going to be a case of "getting in the hard miles" and "getting the rhythm of the racing into the legs," or is Froome going to actually compete?
Is he capable of competing or will we again have to endure talk of "building up the form" for some faraway race he is targeting in the future.
The time to produce is now Chris, at the Tour of the Alps, but glancing at the parcours I fear for you.
