Teams & Riders Cian Uijtdebroeks - From the wetlands to the top of cycling

Page 21 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
Let me ask you like this. If YOU would be in Denk position.

Would you take 100k for Cian?
If no. Would you sue if Visma would sign Cian anyway.

We're all adults here, so I I think most can agree it's fair to say there's a problem between Bora & Visma now.

Maybe Rogla was the catalyst, or perhaps Bora also taking his coach, Marc Lamberts, aggrieved Visma & Plugge even more.

In any case the Uijtdebroeks transfer is very messy & not exactly by the book.

But i was told that for sure a thing like egos couldn't be at play here. Looks like there is more to it indeed.

Fair point, I think that is one of the reasons why JV is not so overly popular in all echelons of Dutch society. I've got many cycling loving mates that just don't click with the teams attitude, they are just straight out cocky.
All echelons of Dutch society... that's stretching it a bit. A winning team will always be regarded as cocky by some, as you've already demonstrated with your anti-Ajax rant. But it's not like there's any team that's more popular.

Can an agent like Alex Carera really be running around trying to make deals for riders, he doesn't officially represent? That sounds a bit dodgy, if that's been the case.
Testing the waters, seeing if there's money to be made... a bit dodgy, yes, but in the world of sports agents, maybe not unheard of. He now finds himself in the interesting situation of having to negotiate not getting as much money as he probably would have wanted.

There's the contractual situation & now there's the bullying claims.

On the latter note, just because an accusation of bullying is serious, it doesn't mean such an accusation should be treated... seriously. I don't even reserve judgement on this matter. Uijtdebroeks & his agent via media intermediaries are essentially saying a team comprised of Hindley, Kämna & a whole bunch of other riders who're nothing but exemplary sportsmen based on their behavior & reputation thus far, are in fact "bullies".

I'm sorry, but considering the contractual dispute going on between the rider & his team, I believe this is all very, very convenient. There's some real Meghan Markle energy going on here with Uijtdebroeks ergo the onus is on the rider to make a compelling case here & not merely handpick some comments here or there from teammates to prove a 'bigger picture' of bullying.
You say you don't reserve judgement but you are already calling him Meghan Markle. Also the bullying was during the Vuelta, with that WhatsApp group created during the Vuelta. Hindley wasn't part of the Vuelta team.

I guess someone lived a sheltered life in kindergarten.

That's literally what I mean, i.e. I don't reserve judgement (why would I? I haven't been given any credible info regarding the veracity of his claims) & yes, he's going full Meghan Markle with this 'leak' against Bora's so-called "bullies".

Bora must now keep it cool. As Visma will send van Aert and Cian to the Giro and Denk might fall for it. That is send a strong(er) team to Giro. Where Thomas or Remco will likely win anyway.

Don't do that. Send the strongest team to the Tour. There is where this will get settled. For the rest UCI or a lawsuit should do just fine. Visma likely doesn't mind a lawsuit in the first place. As it makes Cian more dependant on them anyway. Long term.

So good luck to all involved. I am sure all of this will get resolved at some point.

I'm not sure, but I am fairly confident that a rider cannot discuss terms for a contract that is to start before the other one expires without the permission of his current team. Certainly that is the way it works is meant to work in soccer: the would-be purchaser asks permission to approach the player.
I guess it depends if they can say Jumbo acted under the information that the contract had been terminated, before making a formal offer.

As far as Jumbo know. Uijtdebroeks contract with Bora has been or will be terminated.

They only offered him a new deal.

It is all about what you can prove.
They didn't know it as a fact, because it is a matter of dispute, and so at best they were naive in taking it as granted that ot was true.

They announced that they had signed him, so that is a step beyond offering him a new deal. I could write to him and offer him 34p an hour to comb the grass in my garden, but it would be wrong of me to publibly claim that he will be doing that for the next four years.

They still live rent free in the head of many a PSV or Feyenoord fan :)

I think Jumbo maybe aren't considered "cool" among real cycling aficionados, like it isn't cool to like Coldplay if you're a music fan. But that doesn't mean they're not popular.
Muah not really, I just don't really feel attracted to neither Jumbo Visma nor Ajax, don't feel that important about living rent-free in my head, that is a privilege for my girlfriend only.

I don't know if JV is cool amongst Cycling aficionados, I actually think they are in large parts of that community due to their hyper professional approach to many aspects of the sport and their success.
