No Phil'n'Paul in the UK this year, ITV have finally taken the plunge and are sending their own commentators rather than taking the english feed from the host broadcaster.

Yes! Finally!

I like Boulting. He can improve at identifying riders and calling sprints but that will come with experience.

Great set up on ITV for the Tour, Daniel Friebe and Mat Rendell interviews, Gary Imlach and Chris Boardman Studio, Ned Boulting and Dave Miller Commentary.
Winning lineup for me all the way.

Gary Imlach is a legend. I'm not a fan of David Millar as a person but he seems pretty eloquent with a microphone. I wonder what prompted ITV to finally tell the heads of state to put the hammer down and pack their suitcases of courage. It was such a long slow decline it's hard to pinpoint the exact moment they started becoming embarrassing.

I was eyeing this topic for a while now - reading about different countries broadcast makes me share how much I despise our Hungarian Eurosport speakers.

Generally, they are stupid; I feel like they don't really care about cycling (only one of them maybe, and I guess there are four in total). They can't seem to remember things that happened at the last race, and my five-year-old brother recognizes more cyclists than all of them together. Sometimes, it seems they are not aware of basic cycling tactics and such (Pozzovivo being too short to get a TT bike was one of their finest; they said that during a mountain TT, ignoring that pretty much everyone else was using normal road bikes.)

Currently, I am outraged. I know they are people, with preferences, and all, but I think they might be the most biased commentators ever. They are constantly fawning over Sky, overlooking every mistake they make, highlighting how stupid others are compared to them. The topic of today's broadcast mainly consisted Contador-bashing (which is practically the usual...), while explaining how awesome Sky is. They can't fathom how could anyone do anything right apart from Sky riders. They even say their riding style is beautiful - come on! They can't even play the nationality card. Why, please, why can't they just find a topic not offending half of their spectators?!

I'm thinking about turning their voice off (as per usual), or going back to shitty streams... yup. Thanks Eurosport.

I think Friebe could be a superb co-commentator for Eurosport if they gave him a chance. He's so knowledgable about all the riders and especially the climbs that he would add loads of value to the role.

He also nearly manages to make the painful 'cyclingpodcast' listenable; because, unlike the other contributers, he doesn't have such a Anglo outlook and isn't so irritatingly hypocritical regarding clinic issues!

I'm watching it on Eurosport 1 - two commentators are talking with the riders, one is Juan Antonio Flecha, don't know the name of the other but I recognize his voice and excitability when they're about to cross the finish line. I thought Greg Lemond was doing commentary for Eurosport so was looking forward to that too but he must be on a different channel, I suppose.

Edit: Okay, he said he'll be back later on Eurosport 2 with Greg Lemond. What's his name? (He's wearing a yellow pants and black jersey with "Tour de France" on the jersey.)

This new Lemond show is a bit of a mess - blend of extensive highlights and brief comments between House and Lemond before a break then back to highlights.

Wonder why they've gone away from having him on the finish line with AH?

It's Ashley House. ES use him for all the grand tours on site, usually with Flecha.

Speaking of which, Flecha's 'just-out-the-packet' shirt could have done with a pre-broadcast iron

Thanks. Now watching the Lemond show, he's on with him talking after the highlights.

Agree procyclings Daniel Friebe is very good, but couldn't be more in disagreement with you regarding The Telegraph Cycling Podcast..love Richard Moore and Lionel Birnie along with Friebe on what I find a very enjoyable listen...saved episodes will keep me thoroughly entertained on my 14 hour journey to Croatia later this month

On Eurosport Player you can opt for no adverts and no commentary and just have the race audio. Also select from all 5 different moto cameras so you can see whats happening behind the peloton, action they dont show on the TV

He absolutely is, he's just clever enough to not shout about it all the time and pretend to act remotely neutral

I decided to try this for a month. It's great to be ad-free but I can't get the multicam option to work, nor have I been able to figure out how to watch this on my 55-inch TV, which is a bit annoying!7 Apparently there was an app which worked on most smart TV sets but ES pulled it earlier this year and haven't offered a replacement.

I am viewing on smartphone, to bring up the multicams you press the lower left corner of the screen and up pop the options. You could try attaching the phone to larger screens using an adapter...or maybe even bluetooth

Thanks. I have the multicam option but none of the alternative feeds will connect. Ho hum.

Multicam doesn't work for me either. Furthermore, ES1 and ES2 haven't been working on Eurosport Player since at least Saturday. I can watch the raw feed though, so I'm good. Anyone else having problems with ES1 & 2?

Edit: One day later and everything's working. Multicam is interesting, but the interface for changing them is cumbersome, should be much quicker. Will surely be more useful in the mountains than it is on flat stages.

On Sunday, Kirby felt lone breakaway was going to win. Kept citing the 1'07 gap as reason. Apologised when peloton swamped him, stating that tech problems giving wrong info.Really, really struggled (as did Kelly) with reality that the time gap was to yellow jersey, not the chasing group.

Commentators in a bunch of different countries made exactly the same mistake, even though it seemed quite obvious at home. I suspect that in a finale commentators don't have much time to reflect or to notice and register details.
