Regarding masks: the only reason the leaders in the west were advocating against the wearing of masks were due to mask shortages. Numerous studies and worldwide evidence have already provided concrete proof that wearing masks protect against airborne particles, even those as small as viral particles. This study shows that a standard surgical mask protects against 89% of viral particles (bacteriophages) that were 0.02 microns in size (5x smaller than the coronavirus that are 0.1 microns).

But if you then take an unaffected and affected person, and make sure that they were both wearing masks, this dual protection rises to a massive 98.8% of viral particles (that are 5x smaller than the coronavirus) being blocked. That’s why masks were made compulsory in China, and is one of the main reasons why Asian countries with high rates of people wearing masks have managed to pretty much flatten the curve.
Some more medical info: standard surgical masks only have a single core filter layer whereas N95 masks have multiple such layers, which provides significantly greater protection, and based on the above math, makes the risk of viral transmission become almost negligible. The reason for why these masks are said to only filter out particles of 0.5-5 microns in size, whereas coronavirus viral size is 0.1 microns, is because viral particles are unable to exist independently, requiring droplets found in sneezes and coughs to be transmitted and these droplets are roughly ~5 microns, just enough to be filtered by these masks.
So wear a mask, make your own if you have to. They DO help (significantly), even if your country’s mostly inept leaders are telling you not to. Not only does it protect yourself but also those around you if you are an asymptomatic carrier.
