I can't seem to stop referring to this statement when reading about "citizens" freely expressing their rights: "Stupid is as stupid does..." I have a high school acquaintance that: became a very fundamental Christian, developed a very right wing/paramilitary attitude towards immigrants and non-white races and decided to become a Christian Biker. He went to Sturgis, too.
This guy was a lovely, athletic musician that had girlfriends of several races over his history. Not sure what sent him down this road, ranting about 5G causing the "kill switch" covid and other Qanon blather. Fortunately he doesn't vote except now his pastor is insisting that he support Trump. You can't make this stuff up.

Interesting that he thinks almost no mistakes were made and the US did the best we could, and were blindsided by the pandemic. Also that others are politicizing the issue, as if his boss (and he) isn't. And yet, this article from the Wall Street Journal talks about how scientists for decades warned about such an outbreak.

I have real trouble understanding how senior officials like Christian Prudhomme can't take the needed precautions to avoid catching COVID-19?

Did we learn nothing from Boris Johnson's near death experience? Of course in Prudhomme's role he needs to closely interact with sponsors and media and is in constant close proximity with crowds. But the stakes are very high. Masks alone does not guarantee safety. The best technique is social distancing which of course is why those of us who can work from home do so nowadays. I am sure its not easy for people in Prudhomme's position but I just struggle to understand how it could not be avoided. I have read comments that Prudhomme and people he works closely with were seen in limos without masks? The attitude seems complacent to me?

I'm surprised that it didn't come up on this thread, but due to a paywall I can't get back to the article, the summary: A doc went to his own testing site, got tested, they billed his insurance $11,000, and the insurance paid.
Billing $11K for a $10 dollar test is criminal!
Insurers paying is also criminal because they pay and then raise everyone's' rates (it was UHC who also made out like bandits at the beginning of ACA, but then missed projections and cried about lost profit).

In the US the way,way more dangerous issue isn't the specific disease,but the lack of systems in place for all diseases..So take cancer,mental health,Covid and opioid addiction, pause our concerns about gun deaths, and obesity..just some of American looming health emergencies..forget politics..
Ask and answer the question..why does @8-10% of the population simply not have insurance. No matter what Covid-19 derivative is discussed,@30-32 million Americans not having a plan,coverage for whatever they catch is the real problem..
We solved the 7-11 and Taco Bell crisis those are all widely available,porn..yep we got that covered. Gun stores..check..shopping opportunities..yes we have enough..
But we appear to know how to forecast and fabricate fire stations and cell towers..but delivering health care..wow total failure..and if we keep revisiting the coulda, shoulda, woulda of places like Denmark,Australia or Germany,we are going to have to be honest and admit if countries do things better than us..
We still don't know who is sick, what to do once that is verified..

That would be what is defined as a "serious adverse event" - usually this means a hospitalisation

In the results of the Oxford vaccine trial ( https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)31604-4/fulltext ) that were reported a couple of months back most people in the test vaccine group reported drug-related adverse reactions. These were generally flu-like symptoms that lasted 1-4 days (several "severe" cases but no "serious" cases). I was surprised at the time that the results were viewed so positively given the safety profile of the test vaccine vs the comparitor (a different proven vaccine). Note that these are young, healthy volunteers. You couldn't give this vaccine, as it stands, to high risk groups

A lot of infections are asymptomatic for a variety of pathogens. Typhoid Mary being a notable example. Infectious disease surveillance is an iceberg that we only see the tip of. If you wanted to use PCR to diagnose flu, you could find a lot of asymptomatic cases there too.

Typhoid Mary was Typhoid fever which is a bacterial infection spread by an infected person contaminating food & water by poor hygiene measures after using the bathroom. In her case, she just didn't wash her hands after her trips to the T and contaminated the food she prepared as a cook (gross). Asymptomatic cases with Typhoid is low - 1% to 6% at best.

Asymptomatic spread with Covid is very rare so testing asymptomatic people means nothing other than building up cases that some governors use to justify their business restrictions, mask mandates, no in-person schooling, no fans at sporting events, etc. The governor of the state I live in (Colo) has gone so far in stating "just act as if everybody might have coronavirus" and has demanded more people get tested and of course mask mandates for healthy people. All this does is create more fear & hysteria with people who many are already on the edge with this virus.

I talk to a lot of people at the gym I work out at - people are scared to death of getting infected. And they're suspicious of everyone who coughs, sneezes, clears their throat, etc (I was doing some heavy spinning in the club's spin room the other day when I had some coughing & clearing of my throat episodes due to allergies when two other members there abruptly left giving me dirty looks...sad). When I ask people why they're so frightened & suspicious, many refer to the governor's comment that everybody might have the virus. It's just plain ridiculous when far less people have/had Covid and 40% of asymptomatic cases are no threat in spreading the virus. It's amazing but not surprising given the MSM that so many lower-risk people live in fear & anxiety of this virus.

Yes, that is true, but you are intentionally ignoring my point. Asymptomatic infections are not something that is unique to COVID. A lot of people infected by Flu are asymptomatic. 30-50 millions people a year are infected. How many are ever aware of it?

The thing that you are missing is that asymptomatic people actually could be pre-symptomatic people. And those people do transmit the disease. If you only think this virus is transmitted by obviously sick people, you are not understanding the true scope of the epidemiology. If you want to break the chains of transmission you have to get these people as early as possible. True asymptomatic people probably never develop high titer of virus. Symptoms are the immune response to the infection. Symptoms and titer are likely correlated, so I would expect people who never develop symptoms to be less contagious. And it is clear that treatments work best ASAP, so knowing who is positive has value in that respect. I would say there is more societal value to testing people without symptoms than people with them. If we had daily testing and isolation of the work force, we probably wouldn't need a vaccine.

Here is one for you. This is why people are afraid. You are free to be cavalier about the whole thing, but don't look down your nose at people who want to take precautions. I go about my life considering every one could have COVID-19. Social distancing and masking have become second nature. It is just sensible, just like wearing condoms during an HIV outbreak. No fear, no anxiety. Just responsible behavior.

Wasn't it the aforementioned Scott Atlas (from above) who pushed for college football to continue in the US? Part of his rationale being economics, part being that young people don't usually suffer the same severity of symptoms as most patients. Thus, in his mind not playing college football is "reckless" (his term). Yet, in my mind this case seems completely preventable, thus reckless. No?

The President and his surrounding staff were asked repeatedly,directly about risks,about danger and death. They often gave lies,deadly false information, the only debate is the intent. Global cases are now past 28 Million. But it looks like the curve has flattened since late July.

Global deaths have started to fall. They peaked back in April, rose slightly through to July 22, then have eased since then.

I am not passing judgement why. Just stating the official numbers. But certainly the case count did stop skyrocketing in late July. Same in America I note.

Action versus words. You can’t distinguish between the two.

On "The Daily Briefing," host John Roberts asked Fauci if he thought Trump had played down the threat of the virus.

“No, I didn't," Fauci responded. "I didn't get any sense that he was distorting anything. I mean in my discussions with him, they were always straightforward about the concerns that we had. We related that to him. And when he would go out, I'd hear him discussing the same sort of things. He would often say, 'We just got through with a briefing with the group from the task force,' and would talk about it. So it may have happened, but I have not seen that kind of distortion."


Roberts also asked Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, whether Trump broke with his advisers in trying to downplay the virus.


"You were there through that whole thing," Roberts said. "Was that the playbook or was that the president just going his own direction?"


"I don't think so, John," Fauci responded. "I don't recall anything different than in our discussions that we had with the president that he said things quite similar publicly."


The March interview, along with 18 other on-the-record conversations between Woodward and Trump, form the basis of Woodward's book "Rage," due out later this month.

"I didn't really go over any of the text since it just came out," Fauci told Roberts. "But you know, in my discussions and the discussions of other task force members with the president, we're talking about the reality of what was going on.


"And then when we would get up in front of the press conferences, which were very, very common after our discussions with the president, he really didn't say anything different than we discussed when we were with him," he went on. "I may not be tuned in to the right thing that they're talking about. But, I didn't see any discrepancies between what he told us and what we told him, and what he came out publicly and said."

So I guess somehow Fauci is now a schill For the office holder. Lol.
