I'm very tempted to make a full-blown short list of riders but have decided to wait until the season's end. I don't want to become attached to awesome picks and see them rise in price through the mid-late season and then become too expensive, yet still feel compelled to buy then in the next game due to pure attachment. I kinda feel that way about Sergey Lagutin, Geraint Thomas, Lars Boom, Thomas De Gendt and Yoann Offredo.

I support King Koblet's idea of last full season for the dopers, the creation of a CQ ranking evaluation thread. I don't mind about changing the budget or total number of riders. The game is beautiful for its simplicity.

There was one other weakness I'd like to suggest a solution for, and that was the huge dropout around Giro time of people interested. Users with crummmy teams lost interest pretty quick. My suggestion is one optional mid-season trade week, where teams who are losing interest can opt to trade riders. Trading could be a simple swap of their 2011 prices, they could incorporate their 2012 points, there could be a #points tariff per trade.

There would then become two "classifications" in the CQ ranking game: the original edition, where the original teams counted; and the mid-season trade edition, where teams had moficiations. The implementation would be simple, a second spreadsheet would need to be collated and for each update you just copy the CQ results once into each sheet. Then as Hk normally does he produces a top 10, intead this time he will produce two top 10s.

I more less have my team picked. With a few question marks.

The team is roughly @7000 at the moment, so I will make some changes etc. at the end of the season.

I would keep it at 33 or increase the number to 35 riders. If your team has more riders it makes it more interesting to follow the game from week to week.

If we do decrease the maximum to 30 then the budget needs to be lower than 7000 since at 7000 it would actually be an increase in the average rider budget from 227 to 233. My choice would be 35 riders at 7000 points for an average of 200 points per rider.

I like this idea, agreed that more riders make it more fun to follow. And next year, although we'll probably still have quite a bit of variety, there will probably be some picks that alot of people take, so throwing in more choices makes for more diverse teams. I understand the rationale of modelling it after the UCI rules, but for me that's another reason to have more riders because I hate the UCI :D

Also, at the start of the year I made my 'smart choice' team (which I entered here) and my team of riders I wanted to cheer for, both of which cost around 7500. I was interested to see how they'd match up at season's end, and I haven't done a comparison at all yet. But depending on the outcome, I could have a very different strategy next year...

If the consensus is that "the more riders, the more fun" then that's definitely the way to go. After all, the game is about having fun - not about following UCI rules :)

I agree that there are quite a few "obvious" choices for next years game, but once these are picked, I think there are many, many different riders you could chose. Also, last year there were quite a few obvious choices as well and keeping in mind that a lot of information was revealed before the game started, I'm pretty sure we'll see a lot more diversity next year.

I know that I have many doubts as to which riders I'll choose (well, the season isn't over yet either), but I'm determined to make a better result than this year in any case :D

Actually I agree with what you are implying, that the game might even be more fun if you pick riders you cheer for. I did that partly this year with riders like Ricco, Breschel and Antón - all of whom have turned out not that great buys - but next year I'll probably use a bit more rationality while also picking some younger/cheaper riders whom I cheer for.

I've found that this year I started cheering for riders that I've picked just because I had them in my team so the opposite is also true.

Seems to me that some of you guys are taking a pretty scientific approach. I wouldn't be surprised that there a flow charts pinned to walls and a few data bases that could soon give CQ a run for it's money.
Picked a 100 rider shortlist for next year?
I haven't given next year a thought, as yet.
Though seeing as I'm only now, about to burst through the magic break even marker, perhaps I should.

Whatever is decided upon is fine, but I quite like the idea of the 35 riders at 200 point average idea from ingsve.
Have the number of riders fixed, too. So if it's set at 33, or 35, all teams must have a full rota.

Looking forward to trying to enter a solid team next year. I play VDS too but this could be even more taxing.

TBH I have a sock puppet team in this year, but I didn't give it too much thought. Used my VDS shortlist.

35 rider and 7000 would be perfectly fine with me. I have started picking my team for next year and then realised I was going to be well short of 7500 with 30 riders. I think a lower average makes the game easier but I have no problem with that.
There will need to be a ruling on riders returning form doping suspensions. My veiw is to just ban anyone whose suspension ended on or after 1 January 2011, ie they could have been contracted for all of this year.

VDS is just set and forget at start of year though isn't it?

Wishing I found road.cc game before the Tour, I like their transfer system.

Yes, it's set and forget. That suits me though. The first game I tried was on the PCM Daily site which involved monthly transfers. I never sussed what tactic to use, and also I kept missing months out, so I was crap. I LOVE VDS, but a set and forget game based on CQ - involving basically every rider, every race - may be as close to the ultimate cycling game as you can get. I do LOVE VDS though.

Is that when we start to choose the teams as well?

Teams will have to be send in a couple of days before the first race starts (this year the first race was January 7) so I'll have a few days to check that everyone's team is OK.

The last update on CQ Ranking is usually out on December 31st so theoretically you can't know the prices of the riders before this date. However, the last "big race" is Japan Cup which this year is held October 23. After this race only x.2 and NC4 races are held so the rider's points/value won't change that much after Japan Cup - especially the "big riders".

I'll probably create an evaluation thread after Japan Cup and then we can create the CQ 2012 thread in November :)

Happy how the weekend is panning out. Anton, Uran Uran and Ciolek (I never lost faith in him) scoring good points plus a few more 5 pointers. Cobo and Wiggins should finish the weekend nicely for me ;)
