Sounds like similar issues to Marcus Trescothick had in the past. Warner should keep his idiot comments to himself even though Trott's issues have been building up over a period of time according to the English coach. Trott never looked right in the previous series and seems to have lost his confidence compared to the Trott of old. We will see how the Aussie bowlers go at Adelaide on a very different pitch.

I'll be the first person to call Warner all sorts of things, but I don't think he knew about Trott's problems. Why would the Australians know about that? England would have kept it under wraps, Australia would have given no quarter to Trott if they knew he had issues.

I quite dislike him as a cricketer

How come? Apart from that incident he had with Wahab Riaz a couple of years ago, Trott always struck me as a fairly likable guy. Not 'one of the lads', with their inane little banter like Swann, KP, Prior, Anderson, and Broad; not one of the ECB High Performance trust fund kids who had their future lined up for them the moment they picked up a bat or ball, like Cook, Bell, and Root. Trott and Carberry are pretty much the only players that (almost) always conduct themselves well on and off the field, and have had to go the extra mile in terms of hard work and domestic performances to earn their spot. The others- either they're nice guys but had the advantages from the ECB, or they're arrogant little *** just like David Warner.

The other news story of the day is of course Clarke set to be reprimanded from the ICC for his sledging of Anderson - something along the lines of 'your ****ing arm is about to be broken'.

Clear as day a violation of the code of conduct for players if referred to the ICC - my only problem is the actual referral in that there has usually been an unwritten code between the teams that whatever is said on the field stays on the field (barring some racist exceptions) and by citing Clarke this has been broken.

And of course based on precedents set and examples over the years, is it really all that bad? Probably not

Was there history that caused Clarke to say this? Probably

Would there have been a big outcry from England had they won? Probably not

Move on England - focus on trying to stop Johnson.

He was only fined because he was caught by the stump mic. 21st century nanny state Mrs. Lovejoy do gooders are the reason, really. 'Get ready for a broken ****ing arm' is hardly incendiary. The only time I can think of where (non-racial) sledging actually warranted punishment was that ugly incident between Sarwan and McGrath about 10 years ago in the West Indies.

Of course. I don't think he knew either but still a dumb comment. Clarke's comment was not much better and I have no sympathy re the fine but at the same time I'm sure a lot worse is said which the umpires miss and the stump mikes. Kind of funny that the English coach wants to talk to Boof about sledging parameters. What a joke. No wonder Warne stood up for Clarke, he and Merv Hughes were two of the best at sledging. This is Ashes cricket and I expect the Aussies to rub it in just like the English do if they win the series. Let's face it it's one of the most intense rivalries in world sport and has been for years which is what makes it so great to watch. It's the dumb off field comments on Twitter etc...that we can do without but even those are mostly harmless and team management are there to handle that.

He has a propensity to hold fast bowlers up at the top of their run-up (let's not forget England's over-rate is too slow as it is) and likes to dig a hole as his mark in the crease. This and he somehow naturally comes across as someone who is arrogant when batting.

100% agree.

Whilst I thought what Clarke said was puerile I don't think it was anything that deserved sanction tbh.

Also although he did go against the convention of not saying anything outside of the match and you can criticise him for that if you want, I don't put any further blame on Warner for what has subsequently become known, just a bit unfortunate.

Trott made the right decision and I hope Ballance gets a chance in the next test.

It is actually refreshing to see that England is a lot like Australia in the sense that there isn't too much quality behind the top 6 (minus Carberry) in the reserves.

To me Stokes should play, would give a better balance as a proper fifth bowler and a good batsman, and he is no shrinking violet so he wont be intimidated by the pathetic sledging of idiots like Clarke

Perhaps you should tell Jimmy Anderson to keep his mouth shut as well

I think banter/sledging are ok as long as there is humor involved.Clarke can do much better than the broken arm comment. Not so Warner, he us just as dumb as a box of rocks.

Very "English" start to the game

England might rue playing Stokes ahead of Ballance - also Monty in for Tremlett probably makes sense but he needs to perform.

monty had to play thats for sure so stokes or bresnan then had get in, given bresnans record in oz id have picked him but something had to be changed. Can't complain this is a batters pitch for the first 3 days.

I don't hold out much hope of us stopping the streak of getting battered at Perth so unless England can pull off a miracle and save this match it will all be over before the Boxing day test.

Clever Aussies, they could have made us Follow on and closed out the game. Instead they allow our bowlers to receive some more battering, before they annihilate our batting lineup. All so that we go away totally and utterly demoralised.

Can't believe the two wickets this morning. Not very smart shots for a team in England's position.

Especially the pull from Cook, why try to pull an in form bowler in his first over when you yourself is hopelessly out of form? He should've played more simple.
