There are time limits for every stage, including TTs. The time limit today is set a 125% of the winner's time, therefore if the winner finished in 1:00:00, all riders outside 1:15:00 would be outside of the time limit and could be excluded from the next stage.

If Durbridge were to win the stage, everyone within c. 16:12 of the winner would make it.

They have to have to a time limit for TTs, else the domestiques would trundle round at recovery pace to save their legs for the next day.
