If Movistar GC ambitions implode early is their any possibility Valverde could be tempted to have a crack at the points competition.

How many minutes does he have to lose to be able to go out into breaks to collect points and go stage hunting?

That's just not true. Maybe you should rewatch Roubaix last year and not just see that he was 30th or something. Maybe rewatch Dauphiné as well, winning bunch sprints and literally killing Dumoulin and the rest in the TT.
He was very, very good back then, but that was not a beast mode, this is..!

5 would be enough for me but more likely 10 needed to persuade all teams not to chase hard.

Could easily let go on the opening two days and lose enough time but I am aware he has always been loath to deliberately leak time.

5 minutes won't do it. He's been 5 minutes down and teams have literally said if they let him go in a break down that little he'll end up winning the whole thing if they let him in a break. My guess is he likely needs to be at least 15 minutes down before they'd let him go in a break. It's not in his mentality to lose time intentionally. He also said after today's said that his sensations are better after this stage than they were at any point during Burgos.

So.. Soler, likes being a domestique, i take it?

Well he isn't going to the Tour and his goals are in Italy after the Tour so he does have time to get some form. However, this isn't exactly helping his cause.

It'll never happen. Bala isn't wired that way. He could certainly win a stage but it won't be like that.

I totally agree with you. He can't intentionally lose time even if that is supposed to be the plan. He just can't allow it of himself. He said after today's stage that the sensations are better than at any time during Burgos. It sounds like he's racing himself into race shape and once he's actually in race shape he could definitely win a stage.

As was mentioned earlier, I too was thinking that van Aert might be a real contender for the green jersey in the TDF if he were not conscripted to GC support. Not sure if Sagan can do it yet again . . . but he will probably twist himself into form in the next couple weeks. Eight green jerseys is a pretty crazy thought.

The team will probably let him go for a stage win but I think it's all about the overall for them at least this year.

Yes, Green Jersey could be Van Aert's target.
This year especially since there's no string of sprint stages at the beginning where he could find himself too far behind in the competition (Sagan always manages to mix with the pure specialists).
GC duties, though, might prevent him from going for it.

Green Jersey classification needs more committed contenders.

He is also one of the few riders in the world who have raced at least one Grand Tour and won stages in all of them. He needs to keep that up.
Stop with such nonsense.

Van Aert is obviously the bamboozle candidate for when they let him take yellow and they find out way too late he's is fully elite climber too.

Do you think Jumbo need Van Aert so much in his duties? Will he be Luke Rowe or 2012 EBH for them this year? Drilling flats and early climbs?
