Mighty Wout is such a kindhearted human being. Not only he let Gaudu win but he also celebrated his colleague's success at the finish!

And there was me thinking him and Jumbo were so arrogant that all he thought he had to do was push a few watts and he'd win. I stand corrected by humble Wout.

I never want to see Ineos win but a Ganna victory would add to the fun. #notthetourofbritain

Gaudu's victory celebration is pretty smart, as it easily doubles as a "Just showing respect for a colleague!" gesture.

That's totally what I first thought had happened; that Gaudu had been the one to celebrate too early, but then he just went "What you mean 'celebrating too early'? I'm just clapping for Van Aert! Can't a nice, spectacled, Breton boy, who gets pickyback rides from his teammate(s) show admiration for a colleague?"

Huh?

Just now finished watching a replay of the finish - wow, wtf Wout?!

It's because he wasn't thinking straight, simple as.

He'd been dropped, barely made it back, then launched his sprint pretty early &... oops.

JV are very rigid with their race strategy, i.e. once they'd finished their breakfast & the pre-team meeting declared 'all for WvA', they stuck to the plan. No matter the finer details of the race as it unfolded (or the legs of their chosen stage winner).

Seen some people unironically claim Jumbo should go all in for Van Aert and the green jersey at the Tour and just let Roglic fend for himself or something.

Reminder that Jumbo already cost Roglic' best shot at the Tour by choosing Dylan fking Groenwegen over him.

I don't think Wout didn't have the legs. Positioning and timing of Vingegaard/van Aert didn't seem great. Happens. Of course celebrating too early always looks stupid.

I think Van Aert was almost dropped on the penultimate kilometer. Or he was just roping, but suddenly he was far away from the front of the group where he had been sitting throughout the final climb. Then Vingegaard brought him back as Roglic took the front and probably slowed things down a little.
