Greater London is pretty huge but London proper is small enough at least from a cycling perspective. You can easily cycle from Hyde Park in the West to Tower Bridge in the East in 20 minutes.
Probably even faster from North to South.
Come on, Hitch, you're talking about cycling from one side of central London to another. In fact, you're not talking about leaving Zone 1 in your example [The Underground covers zones 1-6 in more or less concentric circles, zone 1 being Central London].
Brent, will you be living in Central London? Could you define 'West' London? Then people could make some more informed recommendations. Most of the main clubs have already been covered by other posters. The best riding is west of London into the Chilterns [roughly 35-40 miles from Central London] and the Surrey/Sussex/Kent hills bordering the M25 [roughly 25 miles from Central London]. Depending on your salary and office (?) location, I would recommend Wimbledon as good location for basing yourself - close to to some decent riding and good links via the Underground or train into central London.
Good luck and welcome to Blighty
