Deaths of 18 athletes since the 2012 games being referred to as a curse. Obviously I'm not suggesting that 18 people have died from performance enhancing drugs, however it would be interesting to see the causes. Its amusing that people could entertain the idea that a high number of people dying is because of a curse instead of a cocktail of drugs though.

At the bottom of the article, it lists the causes.
Transport accidents (car, helicopter, boat and bike) followed by shootings covers the majority.

I don't think drugs contribute to those (unless via DUI)

I hear you.
But Seppelt has broken through, publically, and people (including journalists) pay attention to him. Every little helps.

Seppelt hasn't broken through anything. He works for ARD, which is funded by the German state. Him going on about Russia, at this time when anything any Russian does (politics, sport, media, regular joe) is scrutinized tells me what his agenda is. People here say he has a history of uncovering doping. I'll ask again, what happened with those reports? Did anyone call for German sport to be banned from the Olympics? There's hardly a peep from him or the rest of the German media regarding the widespread use of doping in the Bundesliga. I suppose nobody wants to touch that, because it would create quite a hail storm. The guy reminds me of David Walsh. If we have someone like Paul Kimmage, for example, looking into doping stories, that would be great. Anything Russian is consistently bashed in the German media. It all started in 2 1/2-3 years ago with the Ukrainian crisis. It's easy to point fingers at the Russians. It's easy for anyone to point fingers at foreigners, but hardly anyone wants to point to their own house. The Russians do this as well.

I have no idea if Seppelt has had access to information of sufficient quality to expose doping in the Bundesliga nor if ARD has ever suppressed his activity when it comes to German athletes. If that were the case, it would indeed be lamentable.

I veer toward the pragmatic, though, when it comes to exposing doping and raising public awareness. I prefer to have journalists do something (even if it's limited), rather than nothing. The fight against doping wont get ramped-up sufficiently until public indignation demands it, so everything that lifts the veil from the fans eyes is good.

Are Tygart+USADA, Pound, Seppelt et al perfect? Maybe not, but I'll take it when they do something positive. There are lots of people who could make good things happen, but do nothing.

Considering that Seppelt acted on information from a whistle blower then he, or probably any other investigative journalist, is going to need the same in whatever sport and in whatever country in order to get started.

She was a middle distance runner who competed at the World Indoors in the 1500m this year, so it is not that surprising she beat a record that is on the slow side. Three women from Japan beat her time at the same event to put it into perspective. Only one of the Japanese I would consider to be world class. The other two are standard corporate runners. The time does not even make it into the fastest 1000 times in the history of the distance.

I am surprised that a record that is on the slow side had lasted so long through the EPO era. It goes to show that there are some athletes that still run clean in Sweden. It also shows that there are not a lot of runners lining up to run long distance in Sweden.

After he got funding from the German government. If it had been a Russian 'investigative journalist,' exposing doping in Germany or the US or Britain, we would have called him a Putin shill and a joke.

Apparently Kenya are going to be declared WADA non-compliant today:

Well, they should probably decide to keep Russia in the games as well. I mean, it will have a huge effect on the American media. They'll have so many things to talk about! Even more so than Sochi, where during the opening ceremony, people like Bob Costas just kept drilling us on how bad Russia and its people were. Could you imagine what they'll be saying in August?? They'll get Justin Gatlin to talk about how it's not right to have dopers competing alongside clean, honest athletes. Then Marty Liqouri and Larry Rawson will talk about the Kenyans and how suspicious they all are. I could also imagine the drivel over at the BBC with Steve Cram.

Thank goodness Brit hero Mo managed to avoid all those nasty dopers during his several training camps in Kenya.

Paula has told us its only down to a few 'rouge doctors' otherwise Kenya is cleans.

Perhaps Paula should head WADA, IAAF, UKAD and IOC at the same time, if she knows so much. We wouldn't have to worry about doping anymore. Everyone would be racing clean and the testing would be transparent.

Spanish authorities bust up a ring of former cycling pros catering to amateur athletes of tri, cycling, football. None of that is surprising except that the first commenter on the story says: "Lance was no different than other...". I didn't know Lance got up that early and started posting his whitewash....

Not completely on topic, but if these Olympics are the cluster**** people are predicting, might it make it more likely rather than less, that stuff about PEDs comes out? I.e. currently stuff is covered up we assume, as pro athletics is a "product worth protecting", but if Rio really is a mess (viruses, dirty water, organisational chaos etc) might a few sponsors pull out and devalue said product (a la what happened after Montreal 1976 then the boycott at 1980). With less to lose, a few more whistleblowers might then come out of the woodwork.
